Myth 2.

You need a Tom Wilson to win in the playoffs.

No, you need elite talent. Tom Wilson had a Ottawa Senator style cinderella type one off playoff run. Good for him and the Caps, but they came within a C hair of going out in the first round last year . If your team needs Tom Wilson to win in the playoffs, you're doing something wrong. Like the player but lets not kid ourselves that its the Tom Wilson's who win the cup and not the Kopitar Doughtys or Malkin and Crosbys or Bergerons and Charas.

While Wilsons performance last playoffs was great..awesome even.. by getting under other players skin and scoring about 15 points in 21 games, lets be honest with ourselves. He had a grand total of 5 points in his previous 40 playoff games and guys like him can cost you a series by taking dumb penalties.

exactly my point, like i said previously , leafs play caps 1st round tom wilson
is gonna run matthews marner and tavares every game,....whos gonna stop him on this lineup right now? ..... no one

- CarlitoBrigante

We dont need to stop Tom Wilson. We need to be a better team than the Caps and out score them. The book is out on Wilson. He'll either get suspensed or sit in the box...

Id like to know how the Caps are going to stop 3 solid scoring lines we throw out, not who wins fights or hitting contests. Sharks tried to tough guy Kadri all game the other night. How far did that get them?

I think they need to be prepared to fight through checks. The nhl has clearly decided it is OK that the playoffs is a different game than the regular season. The Leafs players need to not wilt under pressure and tight checking.

BTW, Tom Wilson is kind of screwed. Can he really run Matthews and Marner for 7 games in a playoff series? The guy will end up suspended.
That new contract the Caps gave him is hilariously horrible.

Yes for sure but when your core and high end talent are pretty much teenagers it takes time to develop that side of their game. I dont think it will be an issue this post season as our guys are starting to hit their prime.

Good luck beating a team that has Matthews/Tavares/Kadri down the middle. WE lost in the 3rd period of game 7 against Boston and everyone on the Leafs played horrible except Marner and we added Tavares.

Yup. Do people really think all of that will be repeated and TAvares will have no impact?
Is there any chance Freddie plays like that again (Under .900 save % in the series?)

We would beat Boston good if that series occurs today.

Kadri's potential role vs the Bergeron line in the playoffs is what Nazem lives for. If they face each other again this year, Kadri will be out to prove a point. If that isn't the match up it will most likely be the more defensive/offensive head to head match up of Tavares and Marner. The addition of William to the team, could make for some long games for the opposition, as relentless wave after wave of speed, skill and possession keep coming and coming. Chara or any aging, slower defense will have a tough time of it as a series moves on.

Well....at least that's how I see it in my fantasy world.

In the other horrifying scenario, Leafs lose to Buffalo 1st round....

Myth 1.

Leafs need a dman to shore up their D.

Imo i think they do. Im not part of the clan that thinks Willie needs to be traded for another offensive Dman. I"M more of the guy that thinks trade some lesser valued player, add some specs and picks and get a hard nasty talented one that will make you pay for it if you either think its going to be easy entering the zone freely or stand in front of the net uncontested. Not saying a Polak type, I'm saying a Manson, Trouba type. Not saying specifically just examples.

Myth 2.

You need a Tom Wilson to win in the playoffs.

I dont think the Leafs need a Wilson per say. But some one who could counter act the bull poop if it does happen. I believe this type of player will become more available closer to the deadline. So no need to jump the gun just yet. But heres an example of what i was thinking... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbqXaZTzs8w... Ya i know i posted this yesterday but like above its just an example.

The Leafs have the 7th most shots against in the league. You don't think bringing in a top pairing d-man who can gobble up 22-25 mins a game would significantly help addressing that?

Moar possession - Willy alone will reduce the shots against because the Leafs will have the puck moar.

Any number of things?

The question is whether Willie's style of play translates in a much more grinding, defensive-minded playoff mindset against much tougher competition.

I'm not as confident that "moar" possession is what Willie will bring when we need it most.

Much rather have a top pairing d-man who can drive possession and effectively shutdown the other team's top line.
