Rangers GM Jeff Gorton on the Strome trade (NYR):
On the trade, “at this time with Spooner kind of being the odd-man out and the opportunity to get someone, we like his versatility, he can play center, he can kill penalties and hopefully when we put him with our group be a better fit.”
On Strome, “the fact that he can center, wing, PP, PK, take faceoffs, I think he brings a little of everything. With our group right now, having someone that can play in all areas of the game can help us.”
On him being a former Top 5 pick, “I just spoke to him, really excited about the opportunty to come back this way and play. If you look at our team and our make up and some of the things that he can do, to me there is an opportunity for him to display some of those skills. When you are a top-five pick overall there is a lot of pressure to perform and do certain things and he has been in the league almost 400 games and we know where he fits in but I think he feels and we feel that there is a little bit more of getting to the level we hope he can get to.”
Where will he play, “We spoke a little bit today with David about that, my sense is to let him get here and see where he is most comfortable. I would think that wing is something we are looking at, we don’t have a lot of right hand shots on the wing. It’s a possibility to be on RW and see where he fits but having a bunch of centers and that flexibility, if someone is waived out you still have someone that can win draws for you on either side. If you look at what he has done for Edmonton he has killed a lot of penalties, done a good job for them. We are looking to use him in all areas.”
Could he play tomorrow, “it’s possible.” |

It's just crazy Spooner had like 16 points in the last 20 games wit the Rangers last year. Maybe he just needed more time |

he is awful, a bunch of those points were immediately after the trade if you remember
I think Strome is the better player, but it's really not that big of a deal either way

His first season with us was great. He was an excellent two way player then his play just fell off a cliff the season after. Was pretty shocking. Maybe a change of scenery will do him well I honestly thought he’d turn it around in Edmonton. |

Are you a bourbon or scotch guy? If you like bourbon, Basil Hayden's is pretty good for a reasonable price. - eichiefs9
Basils is NICE
Try Jim Beam Black for reasonable $
Woodford Reserve for special occasions. |

Sorry. But honeslty, they need to send one of them down. It does neither Chytil or Andersson any good playing 6 to 8 minutes a night saddled with Mcleod. |

You have to think at some point mid season they get 15min plus per game. Should be now, but Quinn will Quinn |

If you really want something good, give Pin Hook, Bookers or Midnight Winter’s Dram a try. They’ll cost ya, but they’re worth it. |

Chytil has been in the top 6 for 2 games now, playing 14 and 15 minutes, resulting in 2 goals. And they’re going to send him down now?
Andersson will work his way up, but he plays a game that isn’t out of place in the bottom 6 until there’s room for him to move up. Honestly, I’m not sure being down in the A scoring a point per game and wondering when he’ll get his shot would be the best thing for him, either. |

Not the easiest to find, but Sazerak rye is well worth the $35/bottle. I would drink it over most single malt scotchs' and enjoy it more than Johnnie Walker Blue... |

Looking at todays' trade ----- it really seems to be an indictment of Vinnie Lettieri's future here. He is right-handed and on an minimum contract, yet they still brought in Strome to be on the 4th line. I am guessing Vinnie goes to the WolfPack soon.
In Gorton we trust... |

I don’t see much downside with this trade and can actually see a little upside bringing in a former top 5 pick that’s been a bit of a bust out. If he sucks, then really not much lost. But, maybe a guy like Quinn can get something out of him. He was a good two way player at one point early in his career.
The Rangers kind of hit on Brassard as a top pick reclamation project. This one is obviously a bigger reclamation but you never know.
Edit: On another note, Eberle trade lineage looking real terrible for the Oilers. Must be nice having a job where you can be blatantly incompetent, ruin the team and still not get fired. |

lot more negativity to the trade than I expected
did people watch Ryan Spooner play? I don't get it
he had 13 points in his first 8 games last year with the Rangers out of pure luck and it just being crazy times around here after the deadline, then he completely died and this year he's just a non entitity
he's just not good
they didn't trade Hayes, Kreider or Zuccarello for Strome, they traded Spooner |
