He always rubs me the wrong way. I can't stand him and I'm not one to get on the "hate someone" bandwagon.

He asked a stupid question during the Olympics that I didn't like.

He is on pace for 40 plus points, which is solid in this league.

Yes he should shoot more, but if he is as bad as many say, why is he skating with 19 and 88?

Think about it people.

- TrueGrit

You can’t point to a clear mistake as an argument. It is a mistake that he is skating with 19 and 88 and he is destroying that line. He is an anvil. That is why this line generated zero shots.

Listened to WGN post game, they were interviewing Manning and found it interesting. They asked him how Forsling did and what it was like playing with him. Manning said he played a good game, very smooth and poised for a young guy, especially playing his off side.

Also talked about the overall adjustment to a new team. Manning said it was an adjustment new teammates new defense system he wasn’t use to. Then they asked him about the difference between Q’s system vs Colliton’s, he was careful not to diss on Q, but said he likes JC’s much more, it’s more like what he’s use to. Said if there’s a lose puck and you can get it, you can just go get it. Don’t have to wait or worry about what side of the zone it’s on.

- walleyeb1

Good to know. Glad he was careful with Q, but awesome that JC is rubbing off on players, they like him, and it seems successful so far.

I'm not sitting here saying the kid is garbage. I'm saying there are red flags with his training, attitude, and overall hockey sense with the outrageous amount of overpassing. My greatest fear is another Stan Bowman overpay (with a No-Trade Clause). He is playing with 19+88 bc this team lacks depth more than any other in the NHL. David Kampf probably would be a 4th line center on about 10 teams, and in the AHL for another 20 and he was the 2nd line center for the Hawks last night. The Hawks are basically a glorified AHL team past the big guns. And no comment on how your own logic of "passing the puck to Kane doesn't make you a playmaker" applies to Schmaltz too???
- EnzoD

You make many good points. I do not totally disagree. But to suggest that Schmaltz only generates with Kane and is no different than a Kampf or any other schmuck is a bit over the top.

There will be no over pay. The reality of it all is that SB and all gms live in a world of constraints. They can't just go shopping in other organizations at will. What makes the job tough is making tough decisions and working within constraints.

The difference between Schmaltz and many others is that he has all the stuff you can't teach. He will and has been figuring out the rest. To suggest these guys have no awareness and pride, (not saying you) is not reality. The guy spent at least one summer skating with Kane etc...Had a solid year last year.

He will be fine.

This is so juvenile. Two hall of famers sit and roll eyes at each other and poudt and cry because they have to skate with Schmaltz? Really....

And everyone in the room whispers to each other. Guys sending kane and toews flowers and pick me up texts today....

Jeez....Kane and Toews had 3 or 4 good looks each, half of them after a pass from 8 and they did not hit the net or get shot thru.

Watch the tape....

Most people forget why TT was tradeable in the first place. He was lazy and uncommitted. He said his off-season regimen was playing golf and there was nothing to suggest it wasn’t. There were rumours that he even rubbed other players the wrong way.

Schmaltz isn’t 15, he is an adult. If he hasn’t learned by 22 to train and play harder when does it happen? For those in his corner tell us - is it 23, 24, maybe 25? Even later? Why does DeBrincat not have these issues? Or Yuki? Or McDavid? Or Marner?

- Z3Hawk

I get your point. I would put some of that blame on the Hawks though for touting him as the next "big thing" in Chicago since Day 1 of being drafted. Seems like it took to his head and he expected to be treated as such. His play and demeanor on an off the ice led to some of the friction and unfortunately it happened to be at the same time that we were up against the cap and needed to shed Bickell's contract one way or another. Maybe that was the wake up call he needed to become a better player overall going form being "the chosen one" to another guy on Carolina where he felt he had to prove himself.

As far as Schmaltz goes, none of us are there to really see if he does or doesn't know how to train and prepare himself. Maybe he does and he has a much harder time putting on muscle than some people do. Maybe he doesn't care, but puts on a good face to make it seem like he does and thinks he can just jump on the ice and do his thing. None of us know that. As far as comparing him to any of those guys isn't a fair comp., each player is different and learns at a different curve.

Time line for how we will "mature" into the player we think we could be is hard to say because of what I mentioned above, but normally, I would say three years into the league you should have a good feel for a player (as we pretty much do with him, we know he has the talent and needs to work on other areas). That way once their ELC is up you can give them a bridge "prove it" deal for two or three years to see if they can take the next and final step to be a true top in a lineup (unfortunately guys want to get paid ASAP so that makes it harder to do). I know this is pretty much this third year at the NHL, but with how he's seemed scared of making a mistake under Coach Q and it, IMO, slowing his game from developing, I'd wait til the end of the year so you can see a full body of work and how he progressed from the start of the year to the end. Then I would want to sign him to a two or three year bridge deal at a reasonable cap hit to see how he can continue to develop under JC. If he doesn't progress more into the player you think/want him to be then next year you can start to look to trade him in a package for someone else.

Idk about everyone else, but I'd like to see how he can play the rest of the year under JC before making any judgements about him with what he can or cannot become and if we should trade him

I try.

While the team is down, and "retool" is going on, the board has gotten pretty, negative, depressing, and a little overly Hurricane centric

I find humor can negate some of that.

Look please stop this TT is now an incredible player talk. On Carolina, because of its talent level, he slots at the top, meaning he plays a lot of minutes and he plays key minutes. Even with this being the case he had a “career” year last year with 23 goals. Year before 15 goals. This year 4 goals in 18 games. Also if TT has in fact become more aggressive so what? Not a hard thing to do when your baseline was zero.

Tell us at what age does poor little Schmaltzy figure it all out, as apparently 22 is not it. Also as you were playing GM in this post, tell us what you believe he will ask for, sign for?

Don’t know if you remember the photo but someone caught poor little Schmaltzy with his shirt off and he had no definition whatsoever - none. Yes a professional hockey player.

Look at a picture of Wayne Gretzky without a shirt. Unless you don't consider him a Pro hockey player?

He actually reminds me a bit of Hossa the way he strips pucks off people from behind. Schmaltz has some holes in his game and when he passes to another player when he's in a better scoring position it drives me nuts, but I want the Hawks to work with him to see if they can develop the skills he lacks.
- paulr

Yeah, especially when he repeatedly takes a hit to make a play.

Elias Pettersson is like 147 lbs and looks like he should be playing high school hockey. Except at 20 he has figured out how to put the biscuit in the basket because he doesn't spend all of his time on the perimeter thinking about triple salchow jumps that his hero Kristi Yamaguchi can do.

Hockey sense - some have it, #8 is running quite short on it.

Micheal Ferland on his linemates:

"I didn't realize how good Turbo (Teuvo Teravainen) was. I knew Sebastian Aho was a good player. I didn't realize how much Turbo goes to the hard areas and he's not afraid to get dirty. He's a feisty, feisty, one. He's feisty for his size."

The Hurricanes outscore their opponents 22-9 with TT on the ice thus far.

Great to see the Hawks get back in the win column against STL last night. Gotta wonder if that is gonna further push along the idea of Q ending up back there at some point soon...

Seems like the team is gelling together after the team has played a few games and practiced together. Liking the line combinations a bit more after the past two games. One complaint though, they need to get Schmaltz away from Kane. I like him a lot as a player and he has TONS of room to grow and be a potential legit top 6 playmaker, but he is ALWAYS looking to pass to him even if he's got a lane to the net. We need to put a veteran guy or at least a guy who plays with a lot of poise out there with Toews and Kane so they can just do their thing. Dylan Sikura crossed my mind but idk how well he would adjust to that kind of pressure playing with those guys.

I liked the 12-64-24 and 20-15-40 lines a lot. The "third" line played very well at times as a power forward type of line that just drives to the net. Heck even 14-62-29 played very well and created a few scoring chances. Seems like they're starting to build some chemistry which is good.

Defense looked better again last night. I like the idea of Keith and Seabrook together even though they've both lost a few steps. Same as Kane and Toews, they're experienced and they know what to expect out of one another so they can just play and not have to overthink or over worry about things. Gus looked better with Joki which could just be a few game spurt he puts on, but we'll see. Good to see Forsling back and play solid. Hopefully he can build off that. Makes me wonder if when Murphy comes back the D-pairings are gonna be...

Keith-Seabrook
Gus-Joki
Forsling-Murphy
Manning

Time will tell.

Heard a rumor that the Kings might be willing to trade Tyler Toffoli. Wonder if Stan can find the marbles and whits to pull something like that off without overpaying.

- Savetheembers33

My concern with Schmaltz on a line with Kane is that if Schmaltz misses a pass to Kane you know Kane will be in his ear about getting him the puck. Kane plays like a C in the o-zone. He needs the puck.

I'd like to see:

Schmaltz Toews Kahun
Dcat Anisimov Kane
Saad Kampf Hayden
Martinsen Johnson/Kruger Fortin

Wouldn't mind Sikura up for turn either. Bump Hayden to 4th line with Martinsen and Kruger/Johnson. Maybe put Sikura up with Toews and Schmaltz.

This team really needs is a solid sized sniper to play in the Top 6. Sure those aren't hard to find. Wonder if the Jets would loan us Partik Laine for the next 5 years

Wow. This coming from a Carolina fan who's team got 3rd seed into the playoffs back in the day because they were the best of a terrible division. If the Hawks make the playoffs, it won't be because they aren't any good. The current state of the team isn't the best this roster can do. They've been finding ways to lose winnable games. They need to shore up their D game, and step one was losing Ulf Samuelsson, who did a lot more harm than good.
