I really like Sullivan, but he is making a lot of confusing decisions with his players. The same things Dan Bylsma did that wrecked this team for several years. I dont think Sprong is a bust, I think Sprong isn't getting the chance to perform. If their vision for Sprong is a spot between 4th line winger and healthy scratch, they should trade him while he has some value. He isnt going to succeed in that role. The defense is a problem, but wrecking your top pairing and putting your best dman with Jack franking Johnson is just stupid. Johnson should be the #6 getting less minutes than everyone else.

I agree with you, these errors aren't fixable over night, Rutherford had the chance to fix that in the offseason and didn't. Hopefully Brassard comes back, that will help. However, the beginning starts with better coaching moves by Sullivan.

Generally agree with you but am not so certain about Sprong anymore. I think he was put in a trash position, but he also hasn't show anything at all. Usually players that are being given an unfair shake at least show flashes from time to time of what they could be if the coach wasn't being pigheaded.

What I'd do if I were in charge would be something like wait for Brassard to get back, swing a Hornqvist for an RD trade (think Faulk), and then give Sprong one final look at the 3RW spot with Brassard. If Sprong can't do anything, ship him out and make a trade for a depth RW at the deadline. Simon has been an effective enough combo wing that I'd feel comfortable with that shakeup.

I agree with the coaching. I'm mystified by the line construction. I also think an adjustment needs to be made with his system.

I dont get why Sprong has to prove himself on the 4th line in order to get a bigger role. Sprong is a goal scorer with strong offensive capabilities. He doesnt have the 200ft game style that some players have, young guys rarely do. He is not going to succeed on a line with Matt Cullen, there is no way around that. Cullen should not have been signed. Anthony Duclair could have been signed for the exact same deal as Cullen. When we brought up Jake, Rust, Sheary, etc. did they have to prove themselves on the 4th line? I dont think they did so why should Sprong? Sprong could very well be a bust, I dont know either way, no one does. At the end of the day, the Penguins dont have the farm system to be selective with their young goal scorers. The Penguins cannot afford to just throw away a young winger for nothing without giving him a fair shake.

I agree about Hornqvist, but i feel he is more of an offseason trade guy than in season. I think a lot of teams overvalue his style of play. His contract will be ugly in the final years of it. If you can find someone to take him and give you a quality defenseman back, you should take it.

When you get Brassard back, you can have a top 6 of Brassard, Rust, Sprong, Sheahan, Simon, & ZAR. That is a decent top 6, it is just a question of finding the right combo.
