In a salary cap world it’s a bad player to have.
The pens should of taken the cap space next season. They will need it.
But now they have a 3rd line player instead... - Santo_44
They have a 26 year old coming off of back to back 40 point seasons with a cap hit of less than $4 million. I'm not sure that's a bad thing. |

Dont know about that, value is subjective to the team. Pittsburgh obviously can see a 20 goal scorer that plays both ends well, is younger than Haglin and can come in and strengthen their third line and provide some depth scoring. I think yeah a lot of teams look at the cap hit and it isn't bad but not great, but Pearson had some value.
This was not star player type of deal there.
As for leafs fans female doging about acquiring a 4 mil 3rd liner, ummm what's Kadri?! Leaf fans just love to female dog period about any and everything and if the GM gives a damn what we all think they clearly are not the right person for the job which is more of an issue there - Roadrunner75
Kadri could easily be a 2nd liner. Hes only on the 3rd cause....am and jt.
Thats why we have the best center depth in the league....or one of |

If you have the space, just under 4 mil for a 40pt guy isnt bad |

Yup exactly and the point was not he is a second liner playing on the 3rd it was nobody would be on our 3rd line making 4 mil. Kadri IS playing on the 3rd line has for a few seasons and IS making more. It happens. Across the league too.
Santos as for his value league wide you can try and claim all you like, it's nothing more than your OPINION cause you have zero clue end of the day so stop with the absolutes, you are not a GM and have no idea any more than I do what offers the Kings had or could get. Clearly there was value in him or Pittsburgh wouldn't have acquired him and felt he could help their team. Were there other offers, did other GM's show interest? Who knows. Nobody will unless they come out and say it. |

Sure, but that's because the Leafs are extremely top heavy (or are about to be) and don't have much money to spend on depth guys. - BINGO!
Coming season:
Tavares - 11m
Matthews - 11m
Marner - 9m
Kadri - 4.5m
Hyman - 2.25m
Marleau - 6.25m
Kapanen 3.5m
Lindholm 1.5m
Brown 2.1m
Leivo 1.5m
Johnsson 1.5m
2 other fw: total 1.9m
13FW - 56.5mln total on FW
Rielly - 5m
Zaitsev - 4.5m
Dermott - 3.5m
Borgman - 1.25m
Ozghiganov - 1.5m
Gardiner - 6m
Liljegren - 925k
approx 23m for D (7)
Freddy - 5m
2nd goalie: 1.5m
6.5m for goalies
1.2m for kessel
that's approx 87.5mln total caphit, not counting bonuses.
without Nylander / return for Nylander on team.
Not sure where cap will end up, but surely not more than 83mln.
seems that Gardiner is gone for sure.
and even though my cap projections for new contracts might be on the high side for some, Nylander even at 6mln will be almost impossible to fit under the cap.
Conclusion: Nylander is out, because Leafs want to keep depth on FW (Kapanen, Brown, Hyman) for sure apart from Marner-Tavares-Matthews.
Look for young player / players that have two year left on their contract (so ending July 2020) to be return in trade for Nylander; then Marleau will be gone, and his 6.25mln can be used for those newly acquired players. |

If the Penguins trade Hagelin at the deadline instead of now, is what they get in return going to be as good as Tanner Pearson at $3.75M per? Pretty unlikely. |

Anyways interesting article by Bob Mac on more of the ins and outs of signing Willy up now and makes for an interesting read. Wonder if the signing bonus stuff is factoring in here now too. |

Exactly and put Pearson with some of the talent in Pittsburgh, likely going to put up points, unless he is really totally done. It is a good move for Pittsburgh totally. |

Exactly. This is why acquiring a guy like Teravainen makes no sense for the Leafs, because you're still probably having to give him $7 mill on his next contract. You're not fitting him in under the cap anyway.
Which is where Faulk comes back into play, because he has a reasonable cap hit and his contract lines up exactly with when the Leafs would actually be able to extend him.
Would Ferland be a good fit from a roster standpoint? Absolutely. But he's gonna need a raise at the end of the year too, and assuming he reaches 20-25 goals again this year, you probably aren't getting him for less than $5 million. |

Ferland would be a great fit here, but you are right though, anything over $5M and we'd have to move someone else out. Unless, we ship out, or don't re-sign Gardiner |

Leafs are really not interested in a d-man, unless it's a huge upgrade over what they have now. Has to be under 25y as well.
Only a few player fall in that category (McAvoy, Provorov, Jones, Heiskanen), and probaby not available.
If I'd be the Leafs, I'd try to make a deal with Columbus on Dubois and Josh Anderson. Dubois on Matthews' wing, and Anderson with Kadri and Marleau.

IMO some of those figures are high but I agree generally. I think he can afford WN with the other guys up front but it'll likely mean that his defence will remain thin behind Rielly. So the decision (long term) is WN vs. a better top 4 D. I think they're watching Dermott in the hopes he can slot in to the top four next year.
Short term - get WN signed and trade some picks/prospects in February for a rental on D and go win the Cup. |

Maybe Pesce, Rask and Zykov for Nylander.
That will eliminate any huge contracts to pay out for anyone from Carolina. |

You could do that. That's adding $9 million in salary going forward, but at least it's easier on depth. |
