Not saying it's going to happen but it's what the goal should be because those are the holes they have to fill and the assets they have to make it happen. - Unholy_Goalie
Yes, but this goal must also be realistic and within reason.
I agree that Doughty is amazing, but he’s nowhere close to being worth $6m more than Rielly. More than double Rielly’s AAV. |

If Doughty didn't extend for 8 years like he did, or say he didn't want to play in toronto like he did, I might think that was a possibility. I just don't see him changing his mind in under 6 months. I think he's quite comfortable in LA.
As for Pietrangelo, well, there's a guy I hope doesn't extend or we do target then. - mykokes
He also signed expecting the Kings to not be 31st overall. Being on a poop team makes you reconsider that NMC. Like I said, not a guarantee, just one of many possibilities.
I'd go after Pietrangelo as a UFA too but if you get him in a trade (with an extension agreed upon) it might keep the price down a little and also guarantees you get your guy instead of allowing a bidding war to open up and letting other teams get their chance to make their pitches. |

How the (frank) does Marner not get an assist on the Rielly goal?
That's almost as ricockulous as there being 2 assists on the "goal" Couturier was awarded for the Chicago player fully shooting the puck into his own (frank)ing net. |

They are.
Doughty plays at both ends of the ice so he earns his cap hit. |

So what’s the package for Doughty? - As_I_See_It
Depends what LA needs and if he wants to come to Toronto (waives the NMC) but the central piece could be Rielly if the Leafs can get a LHD for Nylander. LA has trouble scoring, it could be Nylander+. Could not be Doughty and it could be another #1 RHD. I just suggested Doughty as an example of a #1 RHD and because they're playing the Kings tonight so it's kind of topical.
Doughty has said he likes the privacy but he's also said winning is a big priority so if the Kings continue to suck, then the question becomes "Who can win and who can fit him?". Matthews has tried to whisper in his ear, so has Kadri. Also note, Doughty is half Portuguese. So is Tavares.
If the Leafs were expecting to spend 7ish on Nylander and Rielly makes 5.5, that's 12.5 in space to accommodate Doughty's cap hit. If Gardiner is traded or walks, he, along with Hainsey, can go towards paying Rielly's replacement (H. Lindholm same age as Rielly, same price, better defensively). |

If it gets you the best player at his position, in his prime, yeah, it is the better move. And what a lot of you are conveniently missing is the 2nd half of the deal which is to replace Rielly by moving Nylander for a LHD like Lindholm or Fowler or somebody like that. - Unholy_Goalie
What if Nylander doesn't get you that piece? |

Throw in Ritchie and Leafs throw in some meh Dman like Rosen and ya got a deal.
The situation the way it is will not resolve with a top 20 defensemen. Pietrangelo/Doughty is just not going to happen.
Montour might be a little underpayment but he would look fantastic next to Rielly. - Blazed
Mountour was heavily sheltered and still struggled quite a bit. He would be absolutely exposed beside Rielly, taking too competition.
If Montour is the main piece Anaheim is offering, they can save their quarters and not even make the call. |

If Nylander gets the Leafs Hampus Lindholm then I would make that deal. I hope Willy sticks around, but Lindholm is too good a player to pass up.
My concern with your little Doughty scheme is what happens when a team is only willing to let go of a second pairing guy for Nylander? Now you have no Rielly and no Gardiner. Sure you have Doughty, but your best LD is Travis Dermott. Doesn't seem like much of an improvement and now you've lost years with Doughty that Rielly will give the Kings. |

One of he and Rielly could play the off side and I still think it would be an exceptional pairing. |

I think we should move on from Rielly. Not really seeing much in him to be honest, seems to have plateaued.
Despite it being obvious that no Ontarian born player would sign, or accept a trade to Toronto, due to taxes, weather and the lack of anonymity, I think the Leafs should waste their time in pursuing Doughty. I mean he just extended for a long time a few months ago, but he was the only person in hockey that thought a team stacked choc-a-block with slow, 30+ year olds would do well, so despite him being thick as poop and playing rather poorly I'd love to see the Leafs take on that massive contract, which fortunately every man and his dog knows the Leafs could use some massive contracts.
I think what the Leafs need to do right now is get older, and what better way than to trade youth away for guys just heading into their 30s?.
I feel I have to point these things out because every one in hockey knows this but the Leafs management. I can't believe they just refuse outright to listen to offers that will improve their defense. Leivo for Heiskanen and a 1st and Dubas said no? Typical.
I know I kept banging on and on about Karlsson being great and argued every single night how wrong you all were that he's not the same since being injured a while back but I think I've proven myself right. You don't find yourself tied with Grzelyck, Oleksiak and Ron Hainsey if you're not a star. |

This is great
It’s (frank)ing brutal.
He repeats the same bull poop over and over again. Every other person obviously hates his wacky stupid ideas and he feels the need to say them 40 times a day every day in a online thread.
It should be a bannable offence. It’s not enjoyable at all to post on here while he is.

So tomorrow, the Kings decide to blow it up and offer Doughty for Rielly and then offer Nylander for H. Lindholm (or Fowler). You say no?
