What if this Nylander/Dubas impasse is actually a calculated plan to take advantage of a Nov 30th contract signing which would be front loaded in year 1 of a 7 year deal ?

Bobby Mac broke down the bonus signing and what years 2-6 would average out to be.

With the extra cap we have this year this theory checks out ! Would us Leaf fans be happy with signing Nylander at an average of 6.7m x 7 ? At the expense of him missing the first 20 or so games this season ?

I wouldn’t put it past this young management group of trying to circumvent the RFA and CBA rules to their long term advantage!

No buddy, when they were first signed, they took up more cap %. It wasn't until now, when the cap went up, did their deals eat up less % and allow them to sign more guys like Oshie, Wilson etc.

If the Leafs get their guys signed, there's gonna be a crunch for a couple years but in the future, the important players will still be here and the future will have more space with the cap going up.

This is actually an interesting viewpoint people don't consider much. If the deal is long term for a young player, and they stay productive or even improve, the deal becomes better when the cap goes up.

It's only the older guys that are given the long deals that become a problem later on.
