No, Numbers, your grandmother couldn't have done it - and she couldn't get 50 points just by playing opposite Kane - and she couldn't have won three Cups automtically with the talent that Tallon (supposedly) brought on board....

Corporate sponsorships - maerchandise sales - marketing the UC - the non-game programming on the cable network - the digital platforms and content - other stuff that I don't know about....

Winning certainly helps - and certainly gets you some short term cash in-flows - but you have to know your business and all of the marketing and business issues involved to generate the long-term revenues that will continue even during the down-times on the ice (and I think they will - like the Bulls revenues have, like the Cubs revenues did).

McDonough may very well be too involved in the on-ice decisions - but you cannot (IMO) deny his success in turning the business side of the franchise around.

Rocky doesn't deny it - and (as I've said here before) McDonough will not be leaving on other than his timetable.

If we are going to be literal, my granny might have fallen a bit short. No question McD brought the front office into the new millenium with all the moves you mention. And I'm not going to debate dollars and cents with an accountant (i believe you once mentioned you were). But I can give you a fact that you can review. A decade ago my 2 tix in the 200 level cost 7 and change. I got them because a half dozen friends bought most of them as I wouldn't spend that kind of money to watch a game, plus I didn't have to. I saved about 4 or 5 a year for family and friends. Now a decade later the cost is 14+ and only one guy wants them. Before I throw down again that one guy is going to have to agree to take all but a few and pay up front. And if he doesn't I'm not going to renew. And that's just me. What about the business man who can't write the tickets off anymore. How do you figure they will maintain long term revenues in a down time on the ice? (not being a smart ass). Just about everyone who wants a kane or Toews sweater has one. Not as many parking, drinking & eating..... A little transparency and honesty might go a ways to keep fans hanging on, but that will never happen. Am I missing something? Wouldn't be the first time.

Reinsdorf lowers the price on season tickets substanially after a down year. I'm not sure that has ever happened with the hawks. But as a fan I appreciate it when JR does.

If you look at next season, they have about $60M committed with only Schmaltz, Forsling, Sikura, Kampf and Johnson needing to be signed, which should give the team some flexibility to make a better splash in FA.

Maybe they assess what they have and need and someone like Stone is signed in the offseason.

- HawkintheD

The problem that they face next year is the amount of contracts with huge cap hits for either aging or underperforming players with the albatross of no movement clauses and no trade clauses not allowing them to have a more realistic and upgraded roster.

All of those players you mentioned are at best bottom 6 guys with a low ceiling. I can't see how if schmaltz doesn't turn his game and points production around you could give him any extension or huge salary.

Sikura would be entering his rookie year and he is no Connor mcdavid, so he can't be considered a legitimate top 6 guy.

To be honest it's time to move on from Keith , Seabrook , Gustafson and bring up the young promising defenseman

That wasn't my point.

The point is, as soon as this team stops winning, most of the rats are going to jump ship - just like they did in the 1970s when Bobby Hull left for the WHA.

Cubs fans, Bears fans and even Bulls fans have stayed loyal to their teams - even during some pretty crappy seasons. And if you look around the NHL, 5 of the 6 original 6 have had some awful years, but their fan bases stayed loyal. But the Hawks "fan base" has shown in two different periods that they only show up if the team is contending. To an educated eye, that is not loyal.

As big of a jerk that Dollar Bill Wirtz was, he knew his "fan base" here sucked. It always did - it always will. That's why he pulled the home games from free tv. It's why he fired Wayne Messmer from singing. It's why he hired management to gut rosters to the bare bone of talent. It's why they drafted so poorly for so many years.

He sat in his glass tower - laughing at the misery he caused hockey fans here. I know this for a fact. He didn't care about the hockey fans in this town - because he knew they are a disloyal bunch.

And the ones who come here to whine and complain - after a period of a decade of contending - and winning three cups. You listen to it, and it's hard to believe they are so disillusioned to think that they are actually entitled to more.

Be happy with what you had - because if the old man had not died, you would still be waiting for your first cup since 1961!!!!!!!

If watching this team win 3 cups while also watching a GM year after year make questionable trades and signings , with handing out like candy these ridiculous no movement clauses to aging players or subpar players and yet I'm supposed to support a team that hasn't been fully transparent?

We went from winning the western conference 3 years ago only to lose to st louis in 7 games due to know sense of urgency🤔 It gets better we got smoked 4 and done and all this talk about change , so we move out a superstar in PANARIN a top 4 defensemen all for what ? Then miss the playoffs and again what does Stan do he signs a 39 year old washed up player, a has been goalie, at best 2 bottom 7 defensemen?

This team lacked scoring , defense and any structure or consistency.

Anyone foolish enough to throw their hard earned money out the window to watch a team that's been on the decline with a Front office that should be changed out is crazy.

The only way to exact change is hit them where it hurts the pocket book.

Keith and Seabrook are very unlikely to be gone from this team because of their contracts. They will likely retire Hawks, be placed on LTIR, or be bought out in a few years. Keep them around to help the young kids out. Their bodies may not be able to play at the high level that they used to, but I would absolutely LOVE to have those to be tutoring and helping along the development of Joki, Boqvist, Beaudin, Mitchell, etc.

it make sense for both L.A and Pitt, L.A. needs speed and scoring Haglien gives both Pitt needs more scoring Person can provide that especially playing that talent might fine his offense game again. This could be the kind of trades Bowman should be doing trades that make sense for both teams. I they decide to trade smaltz fine a team that needs speed and skill on the wing and is deep either with defense or center and go from there.

Hagelin had an up and down time with the Pens - when down really down as in a healthy scratch in the play-offs.

It's truly baffling that Kunitz continues to be in the lineup. It was somewhat understandable under Q because Q likes to have a binky in the lineup but now with JC he's still in the lineup. I'm just a fan so it must be me - I must be missing the goodness that Kunitz brings to the lineup that Q and JC see.

He's 30 and has less than 100 career goals. Good deal for the Penguins.

Sounds like these are the lines today.

Schmaltz-Toews-Kane
DeBrincat-Kampf-Kahun
Saad-Anisimov-Hayden
Kunitz-Johnson-Martinsen

Keith-Seabrook
Gustafsson-Jokiharju
Manning-Forsling

I hope Manning doesn't screw up and make Forsling look bad.

He's a lot like Viktor Stalberg. A lot of speed but little ability to finish. He has been struggling to score on lines with Malkin and Kessel. He had good years during their cup runs, but dropped off a cliff last year and continued his tumble this year.

Probably not but i would think they would have to consider it. Basically hawks needs to get back to winning ways to fill up that arena. Might take 2 or 3 years.

C is apparently trying to be his own man but he obviously sees something in Kampf that I don’t. What has Kampf done short-term, long-term to justify playing him with Cat?

Same for Gus. If Gus is going to be the D-Man who leads the team in ice-time night after night is this a good thing?

The Rockford Files.

Gotta watch Yuki too. Haven’t liked him bailing and surrendering the puck to brace for a hit or shying away from contact.

Also Schmaltz who won’t shoot, passes foolishly and avoids opposing players like they have Bird Flu is rewarded by playing with Toews and Kane again. Everytime Schmaltz fritters away a great chance I ask what would Cat have done. Give Kane his shooter please.

As much as people are upset that Kunitz continues to play over some of the kids with JC in charge, gotta think it's two fold. One, he can help mentor some of the kids and give them some knowledge and direction on the ice. Two, you continue to play him and hope that you can find a Playoff team that wants to add a cheap 4th line player with Stanley Cup experience to their roster for a draft pick or an expiring contract. If he sits no way he can get moved at some point

God I hope we see Sikura, Highmore/anyone else, and Murphy replacing those three guys sooner rather than later
