I do think they share some one similar quality, they don't rely on their wingers to score goals at 5v5. Bo will probably never be as good defensively, or as physical, or as annoying to play against. However, he does have better hands/puck-handling and is more dangerous off of the rush, while Kesler was better in the cycle and during sustained zone pressure.

You're flat out wrong in saying that Kesler was the problem with 2nd line scoring. He was elite at 5v5 scoring during his prime years (2008-2011)

Here's where he ranked in even strength scoring during those years:

2008/2009 = 70th in the NHL
2009/2010 = 30th in the NHL
2010/2011 = 66th in the NHL

Those are legit 1st line 5v5 numbers, and elite 2nd line numbers.

Naturally he jumped to 30th in 09/10 when he was playing 1st line with Hank for a good portion of that season.

66th and 70th are still elite 2nd line numbers

Victor Soderstrom, D, Brynas (SHL)

Graceful puck mover with an advanced brain who defends as well as any draft-eligible rearguard. The transition for this right-handed shot to the SHL from junior has been seamless.

Matthew Boldy, LW, U.S. U18 (NTDP)

An electrifying winger who plays with controlled violence and jaw-dropping skill. Boldy treats every shift as an opportunity to strike fear into his opponents.

2 players who caught my eye if we pick later

90 first line forwards.

66th and 70th OV are first line production numbers, that plus his defensive prowess made him a top 30 player. Elite first line, franchise 2nd line or generational 3rd line player, however you want to dice it.

All this talk about Horvat being the next Kesler makes no sense to me. Horvat is showing a much better ability to generate and drive the offence. Kesler produced offense with the Sedins on the PP... and when he filled in for Danny on a line with Hank for a 3rd of a season.... but outside of that... he was limited and often the problem with 2nd line scoring.

On the other hand... Kesler was much tighter defensively and had an incredible ability to agitate.

I already sense Horvat will be a much better leader.

As Codes like to say,,, #narratives.

Bo will be better and more consistent over a longer period of time. Kesler basically had three decent years.

I can't believe we are tied for 2nd with GF at this point in the season. Our goaltending has been atrocious but we can score.

He had 2 playoff games where he carried the team on his back. Thats about it. He hasn't really done a whole hell of a lot since. He is an elite face-off man? ish?

He did dominate that NSH series in 2011...to be sure. And 2009,10,11 here in Van were super solid. He has had one 'real good' year in ANA for 58 pts but really other than that one season he has basically put up Baertchi-like numbers since 2011 lol.

I don't think new paint is going to help him stop the big rebounds.

I would still have him over cheese just for face-offs alone.

Edit: I just re-thought that no I wouldn't.

I’m no Kesler lover, but dude is playing his 14th year in the league and has been right around the 50 point mark in 9 of those years. I’d say that’s pretty consistent.

I think Kesler was a product of good development. The Canucks development system allowed him to play above his natural skill set.

He was one of the lucky ones.

The last time the Canucks blew a lead(Det), they blew up the Bruins in the next game.

Same here about kesler love but you got to give the guy credit for playing 14 years of hard hockey. Never seemed to shy away from physical play.
