As I stated, Staal would only be traded as a trade deadline deal - there is no confusion. Leafs will likely be looking to add at the TDL, if he's available, Leafs will be in on it IMO. Minny is not a lock to make the playoffs. In terms of what Nylander brings back, I mentioned Dumba - which IMO would be fair. The haul you talk about for a rental is a 1st and a prospect or two IMO. - winsix

But he would also be the leafs 4th best forward, so don’t know why he’d be on their 4th line in the first place. Minny isn’t a lock but they’ve been one of the best teams to start the year and will be in the running all the way. Staal just seems like a weird guy to even be talking about, not sure why a team with Tavares Matthews Kadri down the middle would be talking about trading lots of assets for Eric Staal anyway.

Could you imagine what a lineup playoff time. Staal is an excellent playmaker can score 35 easy and does not shy from rough stuff. Anyhow it’s nice to dream right. We want a cup right? That’s why we’re here writing our insanities. Someone will get it right as to what Dubas might do re nylander. It’s nust entertainment here so enjoy.

The guy has won a cup. Typically it is veterans that are added at the TDL. Adding a 5th or 6th d-man would have minimal impact, adding a guy that is plays centre and has been very strong makes more sense from the Leafs side. The fact that he is a UFA in June makes him a candidate to be traded at the deadline. I wouldn't bet on Minny making the playoffs. They have the Preds,Avs,Jets,Stars, Blues and Hawk in their division. They will be in the hunt imo but not a lock by any stretch.

Edit - At 34 he's not the fourth best forward. He would be the fourth best Centre and not as good as Marner - not even close. I would take Kadri over Staal at this point in their careers as well. - winsix
If Staal suddenly turns into the Staal the Rangers got at the TDL in '16, he's probably your 9th best forward...

The Hawks suck. They are just a big name.
The rest are decent, but so are the Wild.
And with the Wilds start they are already well ahead.

Yes. I think Leafs make a hard play for Staal at the TDL if Minny not in contention. And I remember.
You were talking about the leafs getting tougher - here's one for you. Bring up Mason Marchment right now and sit out Leivo. You add 6'4" of mean dirty LW to the fourth line and he can hockey too. He's got 7 points in 7 games for the Marlies and if he's even half as mean as his old man - players will start thinking twice before they goon up Marner. You also lose nothing by sitting out Leivo. - winsix

But if any one is gonna get benched, it should be Anus, not Leivo.

Stars are right there and I think Oilers will push for a spot as well. Wild are not a lock, but as you point out have had a good start. They still need offense.

You might be right, and I agree on Marchment he's big, mean and can play. Not much of that on this team and the Bruins were quick to give Leaf's better players a glove in the mouth or some lumber in the back yesterday. Without consequences.
