I love Couts, but it's clear he doesn't produce to the same level as others on that unit.
From the three years Schenn occupied that spot, His scoring rate was 5.03 p/60. Hartnell was at 4.66p/60 for the 3 previous seasons.
In 17-18 Couts was at 3.16 p/60.
I don't know if a better option currently exists on the team, but that position requires someone who can win loose puck battles, good with deflections and has a decent shot. I wouldn't mind trying Laughton, JVR or Lindblom there, both really good with deflections and board battles. Laughton as a very good wrist shot. - VladDrag
I think JVR should take that spot when he gets healthy but I don't think Laughton or Lindblom would be better than Coots right now on the power play. I think Coots' shot and deflection ability is a bit underrated. If his confidence is really gonna start getting better, which you could see it improving last night with the between the legs shot, I'm not moving him off the top PP.
I would like to see a little bit more out of Laughton and Lindblom at least on PP2 before I say they're a better option than Coots in that position.
Edit: I would also like to give Coots a bit longer of a chance in that position before I compare him to Schenn and Hartnell in that position. I think he has the potential to be really good there. So far he's been just ok.

With the Flyers PP setup. JVR is the wrong hand shot to play that spot.

Then maybe the coaches can come up with a different look or scheme. Rather save 14 for other areas where he is more effective.

Couts can deflect a puck well, and his shot isn't a negative, but he doesn't routinely make blow the puck past goalies, or make the goalie come up with a difficult save. Laughton has that shooting ability. That's why him at LW is nice, because he can use his feet to gain a bit more space and fire the puck on net.
I don't know if either one of them are going to be an out and out better option than Couts, but I also don't see why Couts has to be on PP1, either. His play is not particularly best suited for powerplay time imo.
He's average on the PP, and his points on the PP were probably inflated a bit due to the fact that he's playing with 3 of the top PP point producers (and one of the top PP goal scorers) last season.
Ultimately, I don't know if it really matters who is in that area, they're going to get points. Some more than others. One thing is for sure, the PP lives and dies from Giroux and Ghost (and to a lesser extent Voracek).
One of the most underrated aspects of Schenn on the Flyers PP was his puck retreivals and winning battles for loose pucks. He was very good in that regard helping the Flyers to more zone attack time. In addition to scoring well. Couturier being able to take draws well also is a factor.
Anyone else see Nolan talking poop after scoring that goal?? - ajw12
I saw it and absolutely i loved it. It was directly to Kesler as he was skating by. I loved it, as Kesler is a grade A A-hole and i'm sure was doing a lot of talking throughout the game.

Kesler hacked at Patrick's leg on the faceoff that started that shift
That’s all I need to know on what the he’ll is going on in that locker room.
Win is a win, but again way to many defensive breakdowns and odd man rushes. - Buzzo
Yeah, whatever. They won!!! As long as they win, I’m not going to pick apart their mistakes. They get a “get out of jail free card” from me. Keep those wins coming!
exactly how NAK looked over the last 20 months - YuenglingJagr
So the GM brings up 2 players and the coach proceeds to scratch one and play the other 5:45 or whatever. On the surface there seems to be a disconnect there.

Agreed! I can't stand Kessler, he was acting like such a baby with TK taking trash and messing with him all game. I just wish i could tell what he was saying lol
From the little bit I saw yesterday, I thought NAK looked good. If they can get him up to 8-10 mins of ES per game and he is playing well, than Weal would be the guy I sit when JVR comes back.

Weal is like a child's top. There's a lot of moving and spinning around but when all is said and done nothing really happened.
