they have two years to make him agree (correct me if im wrong)

Trading him to a poop team to make his life miserable would be wasting an asset..

The best thing for the Leafs would be for some team to offer sheet him and decline to match. That way they get a boat load of draft picks, and frees up like 6.5mil (or whatever they had allotted for Willy) to go after a FA. Then laugh when Nylander doesnt perform up to his contract.

Looks like your first line answered my impasse question. Wasn't sure on the length. Not that we'll ever get that far anyway. But again.... we still have Marincin. And in the lineup too.

Apparently he isn't. Someone posted this article a few weeks back and I managed to find it on google.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/...-forward-nylanders-value/

A few quotes from supposed anonymous GM's.

"“William Nylander is not worth what William Nylander thinks he’s worth,” one Western Conference executive told Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star."

"“The Leafs are right,” one Eastern Conference executive told McGran. “There is no way any team in the NHL is going to pay Nylander $8 million.”"

So if you believe those are actual quotes from other GM's, they apparently don't think Nylander is worth as much as he's reportedly asking for.

Two problems with this...

One, nowhere in the article does it say any of these 'executives' was a GM.

Second, of course they're going to say that. They don't want to drive up player values on their own team.

If he’s not signed by Dec 1, trade him for a D next season or let him rot in Sweden until he’s a UFA.

So they're executives instead of the actual gm. Big deal. They would still be hockey people in the business making an assessment of a player. Still useful opinions for us plebs.

Second, that's an assumption. Perhaps you're right, but in that case should we just be discounting any opinions from hockey experts we come across? Should we trust the assessments of media personalities instead? If you've got a more reliable opinion about his worth, please share. This is the best I've come across.

Feel free to believe whatever you want, I just called out the article as the useless drivel it is.

Here we go again. Trading away our first round picks when we need to be keeping them. This rebuild has clearly not worked and it's time for a teardown. Here we are almost at the the end of October...and still no Stanley Cup. TEAR IT DOWN. We could get a very promising prospect for Matthews. Maybe a draft pick as well, but that's a stretch.

If he sits out, I don't think that counts as a year of service. He is just delaying his UFA year...I think.

Take it easy b'y. Hyperventilating a bit perhaps. I'm all for keeping Willie. We haven't tapped his full potential yet. I like to compare him to Kucherov's shooting ability. But Willie has the creative smarts with the puck to boot that we won't get in a trade . That's what I referred to in a few years with some size, coaching and maturity, what will he be? Really good, I'm sure. However, something 's got to give before end of November. Dubas won't let it go past that point. Count on it.

He will sign and the leafs will trade for a D at the deadline...without Nylander.

One that’s available

That’s likely and to add a player of his caliber I’d get over it. Still the whole thing has tarnished his image, it’s salvageable but not if he sits out a year.

He probably won’t.

He will sign and will probably tear it up next to Matthews. Leafs fans will show their classic short memory and will love him again.

If by atrocious you mean arguably the best d-man in the league than yes, you are correct, sir. Does he make the occasional, glaring gaffe? Sure. Does he make up for it many times over? Yup.

This year he's started off a bit slow as he's likely still acclimating to San Jose and hasn't quite lived up to his usual Norris-self. But seriously, let's not kid ourselves: he's a HoF player and any of this "atrocious" talk is nonsense.

Wish he was on the Leafs.
