Is that what you'd do if you were Dubas? Just pay him whatever he wants?
serious question. - Arctic_AARDVARK
No, I wouldn't. The question was: "What would it take to break the impasse?"
At this point I'm starting to question Nylander's negotiation skills. |

(frank) him then. He can play hockey someplace else..
You don't (frank) with the Leafs.. You don't (frank) with the Yankees, Cowboys, Lakers etc...
So if he want's more than the Leafs think he's worth no team will offer sheet him or sign him after he sits out for 2 years... The NHL is very profitable and from a business standpoint you don't bite the hand that feeds. Leafs have 100% of the leverage. - Arctic_AARDVARK
It really depends if he wants to play for a contender or play for the cash... He's going to need to take a discount from what he (or his agent) thinks he's worth to stay on the Leafs. Nylander clearly doesn't agree with that assessment but is forgetting that Dubas can make his life miserable by trading him to any team he desires.
I don't know why people are so insistent about offer sheets around here, while they technically exist they really aren't a thing. |

The issue for NYlander is there doesn't seem to be anyone who agrees he should be making 8 million per.
$ is the most important thing for him. |

Well if they added a Spurgeon they have him and Gardiner for this season..then they have Spurgeon for 5 mil for another season as Marleau and Horton’s contract comes off.
But yep it’s pretty dumb. Size is great...but at this stage in this sport it’s just a surplus. You have to move the puck quickly in this league. - Santo_44
Yeah, don’t watch a ton of Spurgeon but I do like his game from what I’ve seen he’d be a decent fit. Him and Reilly would be quick and be able to move the puck well. Not a ton for options though that’s forsure, it will be interesting where the leafs go. |

He's worth that on another team, but not the Leafs. He doesn't seem to either realize or agree with that.
Does he want to contend, or get paid? It seems that all he really cares about is the maximum payday. |

It isnt cup or cash.. It's play or don't. Leafs aren't trading him. They'll make an example of him and not trade him. I'll bet Dubas doesn't even answer the phone unless its Nylander's agent calling to say they concede. Leafs will move on from him very quick if he decides too good for the offered amount. |

He’s a number 2 from what the numbers suggest.
He’s small but would be the most reliable player in his own end on the leafs easily. And even for his size he would probably have the best slap shot on the team |

It means something..he’s scouting players. It doesn’t mean for Nylander. It could be UFA’s for 2019 or it could be a TDL target. |

I don’t think Dubas makes a decision based on a desire to make an example of him. That’s wasting a valuable asset. |

they have two years to make him agree (correct me if im wrong)
Trading him to a poop team to make his life miserable would be wasting an asset..
The best thing for the Leafs would be for some team to offer sheet him and decline to match. That way they get a boat load of draft picks, and frees up like 6.5mil (or whatever they had allotted for Willy) to go after a FA. Then laugh when Nylander doesnt perform up to his contract. |

Does he want a maximum payday or what he considers fair? For all any of us know Leafs, aren’t giving him any great options to what he considers a good deal for him. I’ve never seen anything from Nylander to suggest he wants to be anywhere else. |

To me it seems like Dubas wants a team friendly deal...and Willie is worried that they will trade hi for a D. Let’s be honest if a player is traded for a high end D that’s not a max 2-3 year rental it’s Nylander.
It’s fair that he is worried about it and doesn’t want a team friendly deal....with that said he holds no power and at some point will have to make the decision of taking a team friendly deal or requesting a trade. |

Dealing Willie might be iffy too. Can't see many teams if any taking on that such contract if he sticks to it. How do you get back his type of offensive ability with a young age to boot. Not happening . Would have to be D man +, I think. And will that be enough to compensate how good a player he will probably be in the next three years. Especially under the good coaching that we now have. Don't know boys. |

Apparently he isn't. Someone posted this article a few weeks back and I managed to find it on google.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/...-forward-nylanders-value/
A few quotes from supposed anonymous GM's.
"“William Nylander is not worth what William Nylander thinks he’s worth,” one Western Conference executive told Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star."
"“The Leafs are right,” one Eastern Conference executive told McGran. “There is no way any team in the NHL is going to pay Nylander $8 million.”"
So if you believe those are actual quotes from other GM's, they apparently don't think Nylander is worth as much as he's reportedly asking for. |
