How about the kid earns his spot. It's not like he's showing any flashes that would suggest he's capable of more. He's just not a hard worker. You can get away with being a 1 trick pony in the CHL or the AHL, but that aint gonna fly in the NHL

When a team is in "win now" mode, rarely will you see a coach simply hand a position to a young player in an effort to develop him. IMO, other than a few flashes, I think he's been mostly awful and hasn't earned even a sliver of faith.

He shouldn’t be handed anything, but you also need to play a player to their strengths. Starting an offensive-minded player in mostly defensive-zone starts doesn’t help.

Sprong may never be a player who creates on his own, but like Guentzel, he could produce well next to high-end talent.
