I'm not suggesting there is an easy fix or that I know how to fix it. I know players need to "execute". So why aren't they? If players consistently can't "execute" doesn't that just mean they are bad players? Something's not right on this team and it hasn't been right for a while. There are some who think the style of play Hakstol advocates, the style they played against NJ, isn't a good fit for this roster. I know the Hextall and Hakstol are all about the "200 ft game" and "playing the right way", yet huge contracts go to swashbuckling players like Voracek and Giroux, Ghost is promoted to the first pair D, they want Provorov to push the offense and draft a player like Konecny. Seems like they love and reward guys who are creative and exciting offensively but want them to play a very structured and, frankly, boring game. Wasn't it just a few years ago that people wanted to see Laviolette go because he couldn't adapt his system to the players he had? - Dkos
God I would love to see Lavi with this roster. Funny how things work out tho. |

When I win the Mega-Millions guys I'll buy the team.
I'm having MJL manage the cap.
Feanor can be the GM
Plind will run the PR department.
Scoob can coach.
Nutter can run the alumni
Will post other openings at later date. - hockeylover

I don't buy that the Flyers want players to play a very structured and boring game. I don't know why people think that. They want players to play within the team structure, play well away from the puck and manage the puck well. All players have a green light to create offensively. A perfect example is last night. Sanheim was up and aggressive all game and his ice time went up, not down.
I just watched the videos of every Flyers PP goal against. It's amazing the mistakes that are made. The basic fundamentals that are screwed up. From a variety of players, mostly the veterans and/or star players. I think the Flyers PK strategy is a small part of it but overall it's not the system and it's not the coaching. It's the players. A simple thing such as Weise, who is protecting the cross ice pass across the box on the back side has his stick facing center ice instead of in the passing lane creating the seam for the cross ice pass on the Severenson goal. The entire idea of the Flyers PK system is to prevent cross box passes. It's a simple execution issue. The puck moves fast. You don't have time to switch your stick across your body. Simple stick positioning!

They acquired quite a bit of talent through trades just like the foundation Holmgren built before his exit. Like most GMs in this organization the downturn came in goal. We're still languishing with that mistake. Fans who only watch the Flyers can praise the Masons and Elliots until they've eased themselves to sleep but having a goalie with a save percentage over .910 can go a long way to making you look and feel like a better team. - mayorofangrytown
Yeah, well, Mason's Flyers career save percentage was .918. Must have been the stellar team D in front of him. |

You're right. Mason was better than average. I underestimated the league average. I didn't look it up because I was venting. |

Would love to have the Steve Mason of a few years back over the mediocrity we have in net now. |

His puck handling in particular.
We still never found out what went down with the whole Reese thing. |

Did you know that Brian Elliott owns the third best save % all time for a single season?
I didn't know and now my affection for save percentage is out the damn window. |

Meh. He was decent with flashes of greatness from time to time but he ended up digging his own grave in the end here. The fact no one picked him up as a starter after his time here is kind of telling in itself. |

It’s maddening and making this team really tough to watch. The players are capable and the system is fine yet it still isn’t working. Why aren’t these players executing properly? Who’s responsible? Can’t help but think Hextall has dropped the ball here. He’s had the opportunity to add a few key character players over the years and just hasn’t. Everyone’s hating on Lappy as a coach, but it sure would be nice to have a guy like him on the team right now. JVR is a fine player, but he doesn’t seem like a guy who’s going to motivate the guys “in the room”. |

I get the impression he wasn’t the type of “team player” the Flyers prefer. |

In the end yeah, I think that was certainly the case. He made it pretty clear that he thought the crease should still be his even when he was struggling. |

I'm all for skill and finesse and deception, but the amount of touch/tap passes this team does per shift borders on All-Star Weekend frequency. - Tomahawk
This feels tangential to a point I made over the weekend where I said that this Flyers team sometimes plays and acts like a more accomplished team than they really are. |

Konecny with 1:09 more at even strength than Lehtera. Is this right?
Lindblom with 8 something total? Lowest on the team? - flyer_nutter
see my issue isn't that hextall hasn't signed players as someone above said. i'm fine with not wanting to see kids bloctked from making the team. i do, however, get frustrated at player usage. i get a coach, esp several years in, will feel the pressure to win and turn to vets, but honestly i rather see the youth play. of course i also get they need to earn that ice time. maybe it injects more energy. i don't know. believe me i get that the 4th line doesn't make or break a team but i find myself always hating our 4th line.
