How are they going to ice a competitive team cap wise? Who do they lose then?
- aminnes

The difference between a Kap and Nylander contract is like 2.5 million in a few years.

You drop a Connor brown and don’t look back.

Gardiner, and Hainsey this offseason. Marleau and Horton next offseason.
- Steven_Seagull

Even with Gardner and Hainsey it won't matter, they have major cap issues. And how does losing Gardner make the team more competitive without a suitable replacement? Does that replacement make what he makes now, or are they counting on a young kid to replace him? Horton makes zero impact, he's LTIR. This is why they must move out an offensive player, that is a strength, while d is a weakness. They need to balance their lineup under the cap.

Not if Nylander is making what he thinks he should make.

Horton isn’t on LTIR right now.

Dermott will replace Gardiner as the 2nd LD.

It’ll come down.

Wait until Kap is an RFA. He is not playing for free

Wow, then their cap situation is even worse than I thought. Major exodus coming at the end of the year if they don't make moves soon.

Nylander is a trade asset and could be moved but hed be worth more on a long term deal. But im sure a sign and trade could easily be accepted by all parties.
Not a huge fan of AP right now, wouldnt trade willie for him.
Nor would i trade willie for faulk, faulk isnt that great.
Adding a quality rhd would greatly improve our D if used properly, outside of the past two games, our offense isnt hurting. Effort is.

Would it really though? For sake of argument, let's say magically that having a 1RHD saves us a goal a game... so we lose 2-0 to PIT and 3-1 to STL?

Nylander's only a potent trade asset if he signs a high-value long-term deal. Guy wants to play here and he's not willing to do that, so he's going to do that with a lackluster, slightly unstable, playoff uncertain team like CAR?

With no salary cap, it'd be no problem. But with a salary cap, Nylander is a surplus. Matthews at 11 or 12 million, Tavares at 11 million and Marner at 8 or 9 million and then Nylander who wants 8. That's half the cap on 4 forwards with (frank) all on defense.

Kapanen can replace Nylander well enough. They're scoring without Nylander, Matthews, Tavares and Marner all make the players around them better. Tavares did it for years making nobodies into 20-30 goal scorers.

Nobody is going to give you a legit RHD for Brown, Johnsson and spare parts. You have to give something to get something. Even if you did get a legit RHD for spare parts, guess what? You have to pay that RHD big bucks and with Nylander eating up a bunch of cap space, it's even harder to fit him.

- Unholy_Goalie

Nylander is not getting 8, probably 4-5 short term or 6.5 -6.8 long term.
It doesn't make sense to trade a 22 year for a very late 20's player with 1 year left at 6.5.

Kapanen is actually the better overall player at the moment as he can play in all situations, is faster, hits guys and digs, and offensively is not that far behind. Nylander has got more flash and will score more, but come playoff time Kapanen will be the better guy. Trade Bill Nye, the cap hell this team is about to be in is crazy, they have to free up space.
- aminnes

Kap is the better overall player right now because nylander hasnt played.

Holy poop it's been a minute since I read about trading Nylander for RHD. Glad I came back and didn't miss this debate.

It's honestly pathetic that this conversation is still going on. Everyday.

He wants 8 and you're dreaming he makes less than 7 long term.

It makes perfect sense if the guy coming back is a #1 RHD.

Obviously an extension would be discussed and agreed upon too.
