He was the guy covering the 2 in front of the net, wasn't he? Or are you talking about a different play?
I try to call it like I see it, and I didn't think Staal was all that bad last night. Perfect? Of course not. But, I haven't seen anything to make me think they are going to sit $5.7M in the press box on a regular basis.
He made some good plays. Blocked shots, stepped up to keep plays alive in the O zone.
His play 2 years ago was horrific, but he doesn't too often look like that guy these days. - Tonybere
No Smith was trying to cover Landeskog. Mackinnon slipped behind Smith. Staal was standing around looking lost on the boards by the oustide of faceoff circle to Lundqvist's left.

Number 42 and number 18 are very different. - tomburton99
Ok. I was thinking of a different play (Smart-ass).
BTW, just in case this point has gotten lost over the last few years, playing D against some of the leagues top players is somewhat difficult and not everyone is going to make the right decision 100% of the time.
(he played pretty well last night though) - jimbro83
Absolutely. You got a pass on the tape right in the middle of the low slot, with no one in front of you and your 1st thought is to pass without even taking possession?? Dumb move.
And yes, he did play pretty well.

Staal was brutal on that goal though. All he had to do was follow one player off of a face off. Wasn't that difficult

Yeah Smith trying to cover 2 guys is difficult. Marc Staal donig nothing, isn't
Anyone see that graphic of Kreider how he has the most tip ins for goals since 2015 than any other player?
So basically Kreiders job should be to never handle the puck or shoot. Just go stand infront of the goalie - mdw7413
I didn't understand on that powerplay in OT they put Hayes in front to stand in front of the goalie. That is so not his game, and would have been perfect spot for Kreider

Again, I was thinking of a different play. My bad.
My point was more toward how Staal is under everyone's microscope and any error he makes gets made out to be the world's biggest problem. Much like it was for Girardi previously.
(note: this is the last I have to say on it. This topic doesn't need any more time devoted to it.)
