He has played one game this year. He is a capable goalie in this league, and if he wasn't the back up here, he would be the backup some place else.

If this was a long term injury then yes I would be concerned, I don't think Sparks is starting goalie material. But again let's make this judgement on Sparks abilities 5 or 10 starts into the year, not start 2.

- Wissler

He is not a capable goalie in the NHL because he hasn't proven that yet. He's a proven AHL goalie but he's not proven (frank) all as an NHL goalie. In the one game he played, he let in 6 goals and half of them were his fault. That's not the mark of a goalie who is even remotely ready.

The problem with the "5 or 10 starts" mentality is that it could take the Leafs 50 games before he's played that many games and by then it could be too late. It could be too late because Andersen is getting over worked or because he sustained an injury or whatever. Sparks would not be playing tonight if not for Andersen's injury for example.

If he poops the bed, he can be waived and nobody will claim him. He can be the Marlies starter again and the Leafs can sign a veteran, proven, UFA to be the back-up so Andersen can be rested more often.

Who was that 4th string backup last year that got called into the game in the 3rd. He was like a fan and had a pretty good 3rd period.

The panic over Anderson with a day to day injury is laughable. Relax folks. Sparks will be OK for a few games.

He has to be given a chance to prove himself at the NHL level. You say sign a vet Ufa proven goalie, but the same game Sparks gave up 6, a proven veteran goalie let in 7.

As I said, the Leafs need to see what they have in Sparks before they decide to move on. If in 5 to 10 starts it's not working, the Leafs can go out and grab another goalie. Also don't be concerned about Andersen being overworked. This is how Babs runs his goalies. If they are healthy and it's not back to back , they play.

Andersen's health is 100% correlated to the success of this team. The panic is not laughable, especially if the back-up is unproven and unreliable.

Only my opinion I don’t feel sparks can get it done. Just my opinion all joking aside. I like Mac backup a lot more.

Sparks let in more poopty goals that were directly his fault than Ward did.

And again, if he gets 10 games, it might be too late to get a quality back-up because that could take half the season.

Andersen being overworked is a very real concern. Babcock runs his goalies like an idiot. Forcing Andersen to play 65+ games and face 2,200 shots last year was a mistake and it'll be a mistake if he does it again this year.

Scott foster. Just looked it up. He was an accountant and both goalies went down and he played the 3rd period against the jets.

I picture something like that happening with the leafs. They have no more depth after sparks and whoever else is the backup tonight.

I feel like I've made a mistake engaging. If he could he would sign Ken Dryden to backup Andersen.

Yeah it was a pretty soft suspension but he's a ROY candidate, he got hurt and it was a concussion so the NHL is probably just covering their ass with that one. It looked like the bad part of it was the "punch / shove" he put on Pettersson after the actual hit.

I know he’s a leaf fan but aren’t tsn analysts suppose to be somewhat impartial lol

I think as long as he is impartial during national broadcasts he will be ok. Tsn 1050 is a Toronto market so I imagine it wouldn't be a big deal.
