I agree, but in saying that Tavares has been able to fit in seemlessly with the leafs. You could argue he isn’t the number 1 either.

Everyone is different.
JT didnt have the off ice issues, didnt move across the continent to another country and into a new a system. Tavares was depended on to score, he came to a new team (is off season home) that does nothing but score. So hes fit in well. But even if he had one point thus far, i wouldnt be worried this early.
Fortunately JT is super awesome, so we just sit back, smile and enjoy.

Its only been a couple of games.
Lets see what he can do after 60.
Nylander wont be traded for picks, it will be for a D or winger that can help them win now.

Karlsson has not been very good in his new home. Not been very good since he hurt his leg.

I think second half of last year he was back to his old self.

The thing is, he has a career minus.

I get the arguments against +/- but there are a couple things the advanced stats guys like to ignore

1) Sample Size.. because goals are relatively rare events, +/- can be misleading over a small sample size. In this case however, we are talking about his career so the sample size is pretty reasonable. Also, last I looked, he was the ONLY one of what anyone would call the "top" defensemen in the league who was a minus. So we have a large group of samples, and he stands out.

2) The biggest argument against +/- is that it is a team stat (So is Corsi to a very large extent, but let's ignore than inconvenient reality). Again, I can buy into that argument, BUT, I am pretty sure he wasn't a contributing factor on every Ottawa goal, and he wasn't an innocent party on every goal against.

Once it goes on for this long, I don't care how bad some people think the stat is, it becomes quite telling.

Bottom line... His teams have been scored on 5v5 more than they have scored, when he is on the ice over the course of his career.

JT didnt have the off ice issues,

- Fakepartofme

You could argue the whole "teade/resign" thing was an off ice issue that dragged on forever. Not 100% his fault but it did affect the team.

didnt move across the continent to another country and into a new a system.

You are aware Canada is not in the United States, right? It wasn't a move across the continent, so you get a pass on that one. And the Leafs play an entirely different system he had to learn over the summer.

Tavares was depended on to score, he came to a new team (is off season home) that does nothing but score. So hes fit in well. But even if he had one point thus far, i wouldnt be worried this early.

He's being paid $11mil a year... He is expected to score in Toronto. He just isn't the ONLY person on the team who can score, like he was in NYI (Barzal excluded). And no one is worried, because we knew he would perform well once he dropped the anchor of bad NYI management and set sail for the shinging seas of non-suckage (not greatness, greatness is earned and proven, it's just not awful anymore).

Fortunately JT is super awesome, so we just sit back, smile and enjoy.

Agreed.
