I got through 2 pages of comments. Some sensible, some not. The bottom line is this. Petterson made Matheson look like a joke more than once in that game. You could tell Matheson was getting frustrated. He gave Petterson a shot at the side of the net before EP skated around the net and to the boards. Petterson's back was turned to receive the puck. Matheson proceeded to run him into the boards, which should have been a 2 minute boarding penalty as it is.. no call. That's fine. The real problem comes when he takes a kid who was already rubbed out of the play, picks him up and absolutely smashes him onto the ice with reckless force. That's hockey?? Come on... If this had happened to a star player on ANY of your teams, you'd want blood. The hit was marginally dangerous, riding a guy into the boards from the back, and the choke slam was absolutely predatory. You're going to give Wilson 20 games for railroading a guy cutting into the middle of the ice with his head down like an idiot, you sure as hell should be suspending a guy for choke slamming a 19 year old star onto the ice. Maybe not 20, because he's not a repeat offender, but I would have given him 5-10 games for sure. He's likely to escape with 2, 1 or none, which is unfortunate.

Agreed. The league needs to protect its money makers. However, and not to defend the play, but this does highlight why kids this young used to be kept in the minors. Now it's so common to go straight to the NHL, well, there's men out there with 100 pounds on you that want to take you out. Not saying that they need to keep the kids in the minors, but maybe harsher suspensions for this kind of thing? Like McDavid got run in his rookie year...you can't let that kind of stuff happen. Some goon taking out your franchise player is unacceptable at all levels, but most effectively at the business level.

This is a pretty good take.

I agree with most of it, but I don't even think I would call it a choke slam. The hit itself was fine, on time, not late, to the shoulder. I dislike Maethesons stick going between Petterssons legs, and I hate that he drives him down toward the ice after the hit. The hit itself would have been sufficient, but he needed a bit of retribution for being embarrassed, and like you said, he made him look silly a few times in the first 2 periods. All in all, I still don't think he gets more than 1 or 2 games, and I wouldn't overly be shocked if he just received a fine.

Even as a Canuck fan, I would agree. Had there been no injury, it would just be a lesson learned. The guy was obviously after him after being dangled a few times. Gotta get your stick up or something to deter rather than trust that a guy is only going to rub you out or check you legally. Then wait got Brashear or Odjick to arrive ... wait what year is this again??

The only thing is that the league has, for some time now, taken injury into account so he probably gets a game or two.

You're a f***ing moron if you find that was a run of the mill hit. You're the problem. Gutless like the goons.

Lighten up, Francis. That's not what I was saying. The slam was wholly unnecessary.

Bring back enforcers, maybe they will think twice before they ruff someone up like that. Same way with raising kids nowadays, kids don't get spankings anymore, now look at them. Look at our law system, criminals face a little punishment after they commit the crime, then they do it again. Groundings, suspensions, short jail time and minor fines won't get idiots to think next time, it will just buy some time. Beat their ass after the cheap shot, spank the kid right after they act up, and harsh penalties when a guy robs a store THE FIRST TIME. This world is getting soft, and it's showing on the ice.

I completely understand the need for physicality in the game. It tires the other team out and gives your team an advantage to win the game.

That being said, pushing a player while they are already on the way down has no purpose in our game. Same as suckerpunching someone when they've already dropped. It's cowardly.
