You can only carry 23 players on the active roster. In order to "call up some AHL guys" you need to waive players on the active roster. And yes, we could send guys like Sanheim, Lindblom, and Vorobyov down without waivers, but I don't think they're the players you'd prefer to send down.

It's not about one-way or two-way contracts, it's about roster limits and waiver status.

- jmatchett383

Those definitely are not the kids you want to send down. I agree. But how do we address the lack of compete from our top guys?
Hak wouldnt have the balls to do something like this anyway so its pipe dreaming.. I know....

slightly OT, but the play Toronto ran on the PP to Tavares is something I have been wanting the Flyers to do more with Simmonds. I know the Flyers PP runs down the left side, but I feel like they're often trying to get Simmonds the puck at the side of the net more often than in front of it.

Well, luckily for Hak, he doesn't make roster decisions, that's on Hextall.

I don't know what the compete issue is, but I don't think "calling up some AHL guys" is the right call.

I'd also like to add that, when the puck goes to Simmonds at the side, he always does the turn and tuck play, and I think it maybe works 3% of the time.

Some trivia to lighten the day:

The Hershey Bears were the Flyers' AHL affiliate between 1984 and 1996. Three Bears' players during that span are in the AHL Hall of Fame. Can you name them?

Kind of why I liked Patrick there. Allows for them to be more creative with some things.

I really always thought the 19-20 season was the year you would see this team be where Hextall does. Based on prospect growth, contracts, Hart...I really think next year is the year for the giant push. This is was or is still a stepping stone season because you have young guys playing important roles.
- J35Bacher

What makes you believe that?

You know Mac isn’t coming out for anyone. Gudas leaving would open up one spot for a kid on the back end.

Don’t forget the veteran quota.

I don’t want Patrick there for a second. The kid needs to grow the creative part of his game and escape the Neanderthal dogma Hak tries to instill.

My thinking was Hart would probably be ready. Your youth would be more ready to handle the bigger roles. I thought the defense really would be seasoned now with the likes of Gostisbehere, Provorov, Sanheim, Morin, Myers and Hagg to handle the NHL better.

It's not just guys leaving like Gudas. More the youth would be ready to take the step.

HUH?

You don't think Patrick there would be a help? Look at the Toronto PP. It is stacked with high end talent and allows fro them to be more creative then just shoot and tip or down low and tuck.

Really that is the two most likely plays on the PP for the Flyers.

Hextall certainly has gone cheap on the goaltending, no doubt. I just don't think there was a ton of viable options to upgrade this offseason.

Also, I thought Mason was, for the majority of his stay, an above-average goaltender in general.

- jmatchett383

He would have had to make a trade.

I liked Mason as exactly what you described him, an above average goalie. There's something going on though because I can't imagine why he's without a job today when you look at some of the ones who are employed.

There was a report he might retire due to all the injuries. Not sure if accurate but something I saw.

They also have 3 guys on their PP that will score 35+

He said something along the lines of last year being the most challenging for him compared to any other.

Has completely fallen off the map, no idea why.

It is just another way to skin a cat really. Flyers PP1 has always been one of the best in the league, so it isn't as if something is broken. That doesn't mean it can't improve, but it isn't as if they need to blow things up. Just some small tweaks. One of the biggest issues IMO has been Jake. He hasn't been making defenders accountable like Marner does in that situation. The PP is virtually unstoppable when he is on and a threat to score.

So, if Pickard wins tonight, regardless of the score and how he plays personally, can we expect to see him start for the next month and a half straight?

I think the thing that bothered me most was the Sharks just played the night before against the Isles; we were the more rested team and didn’t jump on them. Another complaint, and also a big difference from season opener against Vegas, we played with zero physicality last night. Absolutely none.

It’s really a shame. The few times we had good pressure and our better scoring chances, the Sharks would have a breakout rush from it and scored right away. The Couts miss on that one shot was brutal but mainly because The pass from Giroux was so damn perfect.

I thought our best player may have been Raffl. Guy was a beast on the PK last night.

- arichardson22

I have to agree that Raffl was noticeably good on the pk...

Agreed. I'd like to see him take 2 strides in and fire since they're not respecting him. If he can be a threat to score, opens up way more for everyone else. Right now, they're giving him the net and trying to eliminate his passing lanes.

82 game season they'll unfortunately be nights like yesterday.

It just feels like we've been watching the same team since 2014.

I always thought Gostisbehere would be great there. He would be able to shoot the one timer of the cross ice pass. I think he would create more rebounds there too because the goalie could be moving more so not handle his shot as well as him being straight away.

I am not saying blowing it up. but i do like the option of Patrick in front as he just can create more there then Simmonds in my opinion.

I can 100% agree witht he first line and I can 100% disagree with the second line.

How can it feel like the same team since 2014 when we didnt have Provy, TK, Patrick, Ghost (he did play 2 games).

Its 3 games in last at least go 10 before the Team Negative wins out.

ALl that being said, they need to come out hard and destroy the Sens tonight..If that doesnt happen then the 10 games above drops to 5 and some things need to change.

Well, if he can JvR a few defenders at a time, I'm okay with it.
