I got crushed on here last year when I wanted Voracek benched for his lazy play with and without the puck. Problem is by not taking the most precious thing to these guys away they won't learn.

When other will the top 2 lines backcheck? It's become almost a given that any of them get caught they will just give up and let the odd man rush happen.

I think thats the best way to send a message to our "leaders"
Call up some AHL guys who want nothing more than to play in the NHL. Let the leaders see what heart and drive looks like. They are all getting big paychecks now so they get paid no matter what so like you said... take that away for a game...hell maybe two games until they show up to practice and act like they care again.
I wont even be upset if we lost both games with a team full of AHL guys. The message is very clear at that point.
Then if the guys dont gst the message you have to explore other options, unfortunately
I'm so tired of being passive. We need someone aggressive on the ice too. Where is that fight and agitator to spark our team when we are being dominated like this. Thats why I wanted a roussel type player. This team has lacked that caliber guy for years.

Nope. But I did work for the Bears. Also believe John Paddock, as a coach and Doug Yingst, as executive, are in as well during that span.
- J35Bacher

I know that Paddock is in. Not sure about Yingst.

Ottawa is the best team for them to be playing. Forget last night and blow them out tonight.
- flyer_nutter

See, Idk about that. Nothing worse than facing a really bad team after getting blown out. They know the Flyers will be hungry, and they have a lot to prove at home.. I expect a competitive game.

Funny tidbit though.. on the way to the game last night I told my brother I had a baddd feeling about the game. Told him we were gonna lose by a TD... i didnt actual think it would happen though.

What would you have done with the goalies? You have Elliott and Neuvirth under contract for this year and Hart hopefully coming in the next year or two. What would you have done as GM to improve the situation without committing money and/or a long term and blocking Hart?
- jmatchett383

I would have explored a trade for Miller or Grubauer just to answer that quickly.

Waiting on Hart is more than fine, but under the Hextall tenure goaltending has been a concern nearly every year. Point I am trying to make is that weak goals will happen with the goalies they have this year. The blame should go to the man who willingly has gone into every season with a questionable netminder.

Out of curiosity, which players are we losing to waivers while we "call up some AHL guys?"

Thing is, Hextall willingly went into this season with Elliot and Neuvirth as his goaltenders. I don’t really blame either guy. The league knows Elliot is as average as they come and most knew that Neuvirth has real struggles to stay healthy.

I’m just kind of done blaming the players. Even Mac. Yeah he’s a piece of poop 3rd pairing guy. He’s not the one deciding to be played as much as he is.

I’m very curious if they go with Elliot tonight.

- flyer_nutter

They'd be crazy to start Elliott tonight I think. I don't think either goalie is anything special, but I don't think any goalie is going to have a great game with the way the team played in front of them. Maybe another goalie keeps it closer or keeps that initial momentum up, but really it was just a game they had no business winning all around. The good thing about how it went down is that hopefully it creates a response.

They have to come out strong tonight otherwise I really will be concerned with this team even though its only 3 games in. Rust is one thing... lack of compete is a whole nother level

Meh. It’s been a long ride. Frankly they deserve the boo’s (real or on the inter webs) as far as I am concerned.
- flyer_nutter

But what about their amazing ability to draft depth players?

All these college kids better have something for the show.

Oh he was for sure cursing. Its was either "are you (frank)ing kidding" or "this is a (frank)ing joke" I think the former.. Then he said a few more and then turned to the ice again and changed things up. He was for sure heated, but it was for literally half a minute and then boom. Blank stare

Needed a firm paddle down as well. Puck actually hit his stick but he didnt have a tight grip for whatever reason.
- Baxter27

Part of it. Essentially he didn't cover the 5 hole correctly.

Well, Ryan Miller has a modified NTC and has expressed that he has no interest in coming back East. Grubauer would be fine, but he has 2 more years and the only way he was traded was that Orpik was included, so I'm not sure that's a great idea. Plus, that means demoting one of Elliott/Neuvirth and furthering your goalie log jam.

But sure, easy fixes.

I think you see a response. Too much talent for there not to be.

I think they also tried to respond yesterday but every goal that kept going in just kept taking the wind out. I don’t think they are a lazy group.

If you notice, he should have properly read that he was going to shoot, then got down in a proper butterfly that covers the 5 hole. I am sure if you ask him, he'd agree that can be played better.

I said it last year during the Pens series. Elliot, healthy or not, isnt the type of goalie that can constantly bailout his team against an upper echelon opponent if the team breakdowns that much over the course of the game. The team defense needs to greatly improve for this team to have any reasonable hopes of taking any steps forward.
Elliott was brought in to be a sacrificial lamb as the younger players developed and either Hart or Felix was ready to man the net. The sooner you guys accept this, you will find inner peace.

Good question but I didnt see them sending anyone down since the leaders have one way contracts. Healthy scratch them. Send weise down. If he gets claimed even better! Some of the kids can pass waivers without being claimed, right?

I get what you mean, but the point I am trying to make is that for Hextall’s whole tenure - questionable goaltending has kind of been a staple. He’s had multiple seasons to address it.

We should be looking beyond blaming the men on the ice imo.

You can only carry 23 players on the active roster. In order to "call up some AHL guys" you need to waive players on the active roster. And yes, we could send guys like Sanheim, Lindblom, and Vorobyov down without waivers, but I don't think they're the players you'd prefer to send down.

It's not about one-way or two-way contracts, it's about roster limits and waiver status.

Hextall certainly has gone cheap on the goaltending, no doubt. I just don't think there was a ton of viable options to upgrade this offseason.

Also, I thought Mason was, for the majority of his stay, an above-average goaltender in general.

I really always thought the 19-20 season was the year you would see this team be where Hextall does. Based on prospect growth, contracts, Hart...I really think next year is the year for the giant push. This is was or is still a stepping stone season because you have young guys playing important roles.
