By the way, I am not putting this on the goalie. This was a team wide lose.
However, if he comes up with a save on that first goal, perhaps things are different.
You know how it is, momentum is a real thing. They Flyers were dominating then SJ comes down and goal against. After that the Flyers never recovered. That was a save he NEEDED to make. - ggunky
Exactly, it was the Pens series all over again. You get a good forecheck going and he gives up a softie. It is crushing.
If he would’ve locked it up then, no harm no foul, but he didn’t show up until it was 3-0.
I don’t understand at all why he was left in....even to start the third period. Nothing like embarrassing your #1. - landros 2
The answer lies in that useless mid-game on the bench interview (such a stupid national tv phenomenon) when Hak defended Elliot. I'm convinced he felt keeping him in was rewarding him because he did make some big stops in the first half of the game.

This is where I land on Elliot.
He needed to make that first save.
And then, he kicked out a rebound directly to Pavelski for the 2nd goal.
They rolled over after that. That's a different problem, but they clearly lost focus after the 2nd goal.

I think throwing Pickard in a tire fire of a first game as a Flyer wasn’t a good idea either. Elliott put them in a hole and even though the team gave up after the first 2, he owns that game. - GorgeousDave
I guess... but it was hard to watch....I really hope Hart is as good as the hype, because the one thing that Hextall has not been able to figure out is this teams goaltending.

I get what you are saying, but EVERY goalie and EVERY team has these moments, tonight the Flyers didn't respond...especially after providing some solid big saves (stacking pads across net, the countless 3-4 shots in a row in the slot where the Flyers couldn't clear the puck). Is Elliott an all-star, hell no, but you can't even expect an all-star to stop constant odd man rushes all night.
If Elliott was bad tonight, wait until everyone gets disappointed when Hart has to face games like this, let's hope he doesn't become a Blaine Lacher.

Oh, what has he actually figured out? Putting together a string of prospects that are probably overhyped and some of whom MIGHT turn out to be good players one day?

Giroux needs to call a closed-door team meeting. He needs to step up. He's been captain for a while now. Voracek needs to play way better. He plays like he has zero accountability.

The team overall was somewhat cavalier. The sharks had teeth and generated 23 shots against the Flyers in the 1st! They were hungry and they created a bunch of fortunate bounces, but man those 1st 2 goals were of the soft variety.

It's one game. But if this is a trend this season I think we're at the point where it's even beyond that. Eyes should be on Hextall to get something done with the roster (who hasn't won a playoff series since 2012) or frankly the entire coaching staff that isn't getting the best out their players.
Like I said tho, right now it's one game. Just have to hope they bounce back and use a game like this to their advantage moving forward.
