If the deal was good enough, yes they would have. They would not have cut off the nose to spite the face.
- Unholy_Goalie

There is 0 proof of this so why bother arguing about it

You could replace Ottawa with SJ and it would still be the same. SJ would never trade Karlsson to Toronto.
- PatC80

Since they’re going for it, and they will have to give up another first in either 2021 or 2022, it’s hiiiighly unlikely...

...but that won’t stop UG from ranting about Leafs’ management somehow failing to capitalize on an opportunity that doesn’t exist.

Sorry man, that's too much to give up for one season of EK. Toronto would not have been able to sign him long term.
- Kinger34

Obviously a contract extension would have to be agreed upon before they make the deal. And obviously, San Jose will extend him after the trade deadline because that's the only way to give him an 8 year deal which is the same the Leafs would have done if they got him instead.

No they wouldn’t. They got fleeced twice because they wouldn’t trade within the Conference.

Or because the best offer was from San Jose because nobody else made a good enough offer to be in the conversation.

If that was the best offer they got then maybe Karlsonn isn’t viewed as good as you think he is by the rest of the league....

Or that nobody could give him the up front cash or the contract he wanted and didn't feel like taking just a rental unlike San Jose who is okay with either situation but more likely to resign him after the trade deadline passes.

They put a condition into the Karlsson trade that if he plays in the Eastern Conference during the 2018-2019 season, the Sharks will have to give up another first.

They weren’t going to trade Karlsson to the East. Get. Over. It.

Because they got (frank)ed on Hoffman and didn't want San Jose moving him for more than what they got for him. I love how you moved the goal posts though. You start by saying it was just the Leafs then changed to the East. Funny there was no Leaf specific provision though.

If the Leafs made a better offer, they would have been in the conversation, just like Tampa Bay was in the conversation until they couldn't move salary to fit Karlsson's extension.

Even for a one year rental that was weak.

He can't. His hardon for EK is spooky to say the least.

If I see him mention "RHD" one more time, I'll track him down and beat the piss out of him.

It was weak because there was nobody else negotiating which is exactly why if the Leafs offered Nylander, Ottawa would have been forced to consider it, if not accept it. Absolutely nothing they got in return for Karlsson is as good as Nylander and that would have been a huge PR win for them especially because they'd be able to better avoid the 1st overall pick odds for Colorado.

He only brought up Karlsson because he couldn’t answer my question. Typical.

Typically weak question you asked. Was Seth Jones available? Was Dougie Hamilton? They still got moved out of nowhere. It's up to the Leafs management to find who is available and make that move.

About naming an RHD that is available? I wish I could name one. That would make me more valuable than Darren Dreger.

Using Hamilton maybe not the best example. Dude was rumoured to be traded for almost 2 years.

No they weren’t.

The opposing teams had needs to fill. NSH at center and CGY on the left side.

The move filled needs for both sides. If the leafs can find one they will...they won’t do a knee jerk reaction like the Hall for Larsonn trade.

When he got moved from Boston, not really. Even when Calgary moved him to Carolina, that was pretty unexpected. A lot more low key than the Karlsson saga where it was obvious he was a goner by the end of the summer.

Nylander isn't Hall, first of all. Secondly, Larsson isn't the ideal target either.

Bridge deal Nylander, let him put up points, move his ass when something presents itself, maybe Pietrangelo.

IMO, Nylander signing a bridge deal is a loss for Dubas and the Leafs.

It was highly reported Hamilton was available and Nashville was looking for a first line C, so yeah it wasn't out of nowhere

Not if you move him for a top pair RHD after he scores 70-80 points playing with Matthews and Tavares on the PP. It's actually a huge win if the final result is a top pair RHD. Did I mention top pair RHD? Because top pair RHD.

RHD.
