Are people starting to understand yet why I said the day they signed Tavares, Nylander became expendable as long as it brings in a legit RHD?
- Unholy_Goalie

Nylander is not expendable if he accepts his contract. I don't think anyone expected the situation to unfold the way it did.

If that’s the case I agree. There are a lot of people in this world that just care about money and don’t care what they do for a living. Maybe that’s the type of guy Nylander is...

I’m the opposite, I’m a business owner and probably could pick up a better paycheck working for someone but the lifestyle is better.

His old man should let him be

- Santo_44

Agreed. If this is all because of his dad, then we don't need the distraction. I love Nylander and want him on this team, but I have to believe that Matthews and the rest of the Leafs are tired of being asked the same questions about Nylander and his contract.

I see your point UG but Connor brown had 20g last year did he not? I’d still rather have nylander. Call him a show boat etc he is very exciting to watch around the net. Let’s hope he can get 25-30 this year. Still more desirable then brown Johnson leivo Ennis or kapenan. Just my opinion nothing more.
- BreathLeafs2015

There's nothing that Nylander does that we don't already have in a better version. Matthews, Tavares and Marner all have him beat. Kadri is 50/50 if you factor in defense. Brown can score 20, Kapanen can score 20, Johnsson could score 20 eventually. The Leafs are good on goal scorers. They can sign a UFA to replace Nylander. They can trade two 1sts and a 2nd to get one. They don't need Nylander.

They do NEED a top pair RHD though.

Meh. In the Leafs case, it was the worst goaltending performance since Andersen, the night before against Ottawa

Name a young, top pairing, RHD that’s actually available.

He is 100% expendable. He is surplus. The Leafs scored 7 goals last night. They didn't need Nylander for that because they got Tavares. They did however give up 6 goals. That's the problem that needs to be solved and one that Nylander won't solve because he's not morphing into a top pair RHD any time soon unless of course you trade him for one. Two problems solved at once.

Making the most possible money is definitely important but Nylander also has to realize that sitting out, becoming a distraction, becoming difficult to deal with and not putting up points will only result in less money in the long run. If they just took a bridge deal, put up big number and kept quiet, he'll get his money, either here or somewhere else. What he's doing hurts everyone involved.

Nope. Ottawa was never going to trade him to Toronto. That was a fantasy in your head. Try again.

There's little to nothing he does defensively than Brown and/or Kapanen couldn't do.

And even if Nylander was that much better than the other RWs we have, it still doesn't do enough defensively to be more effective than a top pair RHD.

Nylander, Gardiner and a 1st would have blown anything, anybody else offered them. It's less to do with Ottawa and more the Leafs not making the effort to try and acquire him.

Would it have cost the Leafs more than other teams? Absolutely. But it would have been worth it because they'd be filling a spot they need to be filled.

The bigger issue that I think you are missing is that our team defense is the issue. Not sure getting 1 guy solves that on his own.

Nylander is a neutral zone takeaway beast. This is something that Brown and Kapanen are not

That deal would have been idiocy considering Karlsson wasn't willing to resign with anyone during the year. Get a grip

You could replace Ottawa with SJ and it would still be the same. SJ would never trade Karlsson to Toronto.

Kapanen hasn't played enough with Matthews to be able to determine whether or not he can do exactly the same thing.

I'm not saying Kapanen is as good as Nylander but he's good enough to make up enough of the difference to make Nylander expendable if it means bringing in a top pair RHD.

The bigger issue that I think you are missing is that our team defense is the issue. Not sure getting 1 guy solves that on his own.
- PatC80

Yes, team defense matters but having a legit top pair RHD goes a long way to help that problem. The Leafs right side is atrociously bad and a major weakness. Any playoff series will have strong teams like Tampa Bay exploiting that.

Sorry man, that's too much to give up for one season of EK. Toronto would not have been able to sign him long term.

dude, you have literally said everything three or four hundred times over - and you expect us to remember you saying something once and being correct.

Being happy is important.

We don’t know who Nylander is. He could be like Hamilton and could be to himself. He maybe care less where he plays and if his team is good. Maybe he does. We don’t know but the longer it takes the more I lean towards him not caring
