Been saying for 2 years that Sparks is a non-NHL goalie.
He hasn't 'deserved' anything - even in AHL his rebound control was afwul.

And McElhinney is definitely not going to be made available. He's too good of a backup to just give away.

- plantheparade

So Mrazek or Darling will be made available?

Except he has been, multiple times... So guess that's false?

So what do canes do when darling is healthy?

But definitely not the guy just plucked off waivers who was plucked off waivers by the leafs. That guy has been on waivers 20 times in his career buy he's too good to be put on waivers

I don't think the backup will make or break the season. It's the odd man rushes and inability to have sustained pressure.

I agree. Im also not obsessed with fixing the d by making a trade. Like the Oilers did. The whole team needs to play better in their own end and the neutral zone. While yes the personnel on d can use a solid player upgrade, its team commitment that needs to improve.

I think it goes without saying that the "odd man rushes" are a defensive issue.

Also...who is that guy in first place in scoring?

It's a league wide epidemic. Always is this time of year. Scores yesterday. 7-6, 8-4, 4-2

Since the Leafs are giving up more 3 on 1 rushes than 2 on 1 rushes, does that make them even man rushes?

I said all preseason that they should've kept Pickard over both and I stand by it. Pickard has replaced Varlamov and played multiply games in a row, and has decent numbers in the NHL. He looks more like an NHL goalie compared to Sparks.

McElhinney is a good backup, but that's what he is. I'm not comfortable with running him as the starter if Freddy goes down.

I hope the leafs get a chance to claim Pickard again and send Sparks down. Maybe after tonight's performance, people won't want to snag him off waivers if you guys are all concerned about him turning into Rask 2.0, but I honestly don't see the guy having a good NHL career.

Too good for waivers.

My thinking was that the Leafs should have kept McElhenny because he was a good backup. Let Andersen be number one. Have MakeASavey know his role.

And Sparks sucks.

And pickard didn't have a bad game in preseason either. Both McElhinney and Sparks had bad games, yet pickard lost the job? I don't think he was given a fair chance.

Everyone is so set on Sparks getting a chance cause he was a leafs draft pick, but unfortunately, not every pick the leafs make is going to be good. He put his time in at the AHL level, but he just isn't better than the AHL. Stop trying to force players to be guys they aren't.

Agreed. I'd prefer Mac, then Pickard, then Sparks in that order personally

The issue is, we need a backup capable of playing 20+ games if Andersen stays healthy, but also capable to being the #1 for an extended period of time if Andersen goes down. The last time Mcelhinney played 20+ was in 14-15, where pickard played 50 for a terrible Colorado team in 16-17.

Personally, I'd go Pickard, Mac then Sparks. Pickard gets the edge for me because of his age and the fact that he's taken over as a #1 for a long time more recently.
