Pretty bold statement after 2 games

I don’t see how you are being any different than the media?

Well let's be honest here. We ain't winning the Cup this year. And that's fine by me. We're on the way, just too soon is all.

Wait for Lillybust to come in, Gardiner to go out, trade for a much more accessible LHD than RHD and we're golden. We're not winning a Cup while Marleau and Horton (to a lesser extent) remain on the Cap. Need that money elsewhere in order to win.

Good luck with that drafting outside top 10..Thats as much luck as skill..Depending on luck not a solid plan and it's takes longer than 2 yrs to develop D....
- Fruitcakenipple

I think the Leafs make a big addition at some point...probably at the TDL when there are more players available.

The Leafs could win the cup. It’s ignorant to say they can’t win it 2 games into the season. They are a good team with 80 games to play...let’s actually watch them play before you say they can’t win.

Worked well for Matthews
But yeah you have a point.
Before we trade Nylander I want to see what we have in Liljegren and Sandin.
We should sign Nylander long term and if those two don't hold their own then we can send off Willy who would start to be in his prime and signed for another 4 years or so on a good contract and we would get a hell of a return.

Well if ya lock everyone up long term on big deals there will be no room for improving the D 2 yrs down the road..U start fixing the D now and that means moving Willie..Gotta give something to get what ya need..
- Fruitcakenipple

Lillybust will improve the defense at a fraction or Gardiner's hit plus being a righty. Dermott is gonna be a good dman. Zaitsev looks to have bounced back somewhat (still early). Leafs should look for a LHD rather than a RHD (maybe they are).

LHD Rielly
Dermott Zaitsev
Borgman (eventually Sandin) Lillybust

I don't need to take into account the first 2 games this year to be 100% confident the Leafs aren't winning the Cup this year. It's not trolling. I'm 100% ok with that fact. They're getting there. They're just not there. That's all.

It's gonna be 2+yrs before we find out what we have with Lili/Sandin..Leafs dont need bottom pairing D they need top 4 help, da b'ys not suddenly gonna jump right into top4..

I disagree, I think you need to get into realization that the Leafs are a very good team and will be near the top of the standings.

They have a chance like any good team does. You are extremely underestimating a good team.

Have you seen the age on this team. We have 2 years to wait if we want to if it means keeping the core long-term.
Whatever Dubas does, it'll be fine. If he holds on with what we have and maybe grabs a #5 guy at the TDL then cool. If he sends Willy off for a good future D, also cool.

I really hope they sign Willy.

But if he just wants the money and doesn’t care enough about being with the leafs and being on a good team I’d seriously consider trading him to Carolina.

Nylander for Pesce and McGinn

They get a good valued contract on the backend with Pesce and a nice piece on forward.

Marleau-Matthews-Ennis
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
McGinn-Kadri-Brown
Johnson-Lindholm-Kap
Leivo

Rielly-Pesce
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Hainsey
Holl

Edit: (frank) it, I’ll free Kapanen and switch him and Ennis for poops and giggles

So far a big difference I see with this team from last year is secondary scoring. Obviously it's only been two games, but if guys like Brown (is he even on the team, jesus) Johnsson, Kap, Leivo, Ennis don't get going, it could be a bit harder to be the goal scoring machine team we're expected to be. JVR and even to an extent Bozak were far better than any of the guys I mentioned above.
Again, only so far. I expect Kap and Johnsson to get going soon. But there is always a chance they don't and that would be unfortunate.

Them being on the 4th line will always keep a limit on themselves

True enough.
They are both valuable to special teams too which is important.
I think I'd swap wingers for lines 3 and 4.
Kap/John have more potential and usefulness than Leivo/Brown.

I liked Kap last night...I think he will move up in the lineup as the year goes on.

Johnson has been just ok...it’s only game 2 though so I’m interested to see where he goes from here.

1. I doubt Carolina does that as I don't see them being able/willing to pay Nylander 8m or whatevs
2. Matthews will struggle 5v5 (somewhat) if he has Marleau and Ennis/Brown/Kapanen as his wingers.

Nylander has no leverage. What's he gonna do? Not play hockey for a year then start this all up in 2019? It'll get done

Kapanen has been good. Should be with Marleau and Kadri on the 3rd line

Hyman Matthews Nylander
Ennis/Leivo Tavares Marner
Marleau Kadri Kapanen
Johnsson Lindholm Brown

Much more balanced in my opinion

He has made a lot of clean zone entries, shown his speed and has made smart plays.

His two line mates have been bad...so until that changes Kap won’t show up on the scoresheet.

I think Kap is underated...I’d actually love to see him with Matthews for a game.

And I know, but Dubas is adimit in having guys who want to be a part of this team and willing to take less to do so. The longer this goes the less confident I am that Nylander is willing to do it.

A one year deal is the worst case scenario but if this goes to December 1st it’s likely what will happen. So trade the guy if so.
