That's naive. The reports were that he was offered as much as 12 per year ....and perhaps by the Islanders. If so he took 77 Milly instead of 96. He left anywhere from 10-20 million on the table to try to win with the Leafs. But you keep taking it however you will.

So how much tax does he pay as his salary increases? I don't know your tax rates but I'm sure someone in here does. It's usually up around 50% tax rate when it gets that high - or at least it's that over here. So the more you get, the more you lose.

Even 1m left on the table, his contract is huge. As I said, the others should follow his lead which Nylander might be doing knowing he is the first of the 3. First in first serve as they say.

Maybe you should leave the more complicated subjects to others.

Tavares said he got the sense when talking to Maple Leafs during his free agency that they were willing to buy in from a financial perspective to keep the team together.

There's not a doubt in this locker room, I think everyone is buying in and wants to buy in to what's going on here," the 28-year-old center said. "I certainly saw that talking to a lot of the players during the interview process. I certainly got that sense and why I felt strongly why things can work here

- nbboy

They won't have a choice but to "buy in". If they want to squeeze every last drop out of a desperate team with no #1 center, that is their prerogative. Good luck to them.

Nylander will follow his lead because he hasn't earned what he is holding out for and the Leafs hold all the cards.

I'm talking hockey which apparently you guys don't appreciate.

If I'm Tavares who just signed for 11 million to a new team, I wouldn't be telling the young guys to take discounts to stay in his team to try win a cup. It's not that hard to understand. Tavares signing previous contracts has zero to do with what contracts are signed today. If Tavares contracts were with the Leafs, then maybe there'd be some comparison - but that wasn't so.

Might be a bad thing, or it might persuade the young guys to takè less. But it's risky.

(frank) off you stupid piece of poop.

The "I come here to talk hockey" is the battle cry of all you (frank)ing morons who show up with posts full of snide remarks, backhanded compliments and negative connotations to everything you say.

Then you cry foul when someone calls you on your poop because you are too much of a (frank)ing wussy to own it.

You are the biggest, and easily one of the most stupid trolls on this site. Please tell us more about how you are making your posts, from your iPhone, on the beach. We all care so much what your trolling opinions are and especially how you posted them.

Walshy....whatcha think of our first big win, you being a Canuck fan and all, might the the last one, but damn it was a good'er!!
- LeftCoaster

You all laughed when I went on your thread in the summer and said your team had a shot at the playoffs.

I mean, we'll see in January... but it isn't difficult to note the young talent on that roster.

I agree that he will sign. Worst case he gets traded to a team that can afford his contract & can send back a Dman.

But there will be a player that won't because of this type of scenario. If he does sit out the season, he comes back a ufa doesn't he?

That's the thing with the young guns, they want to be paid what they're going to be worth. Back in Tavares day when he was rfa, the contracts weren't the same - they were very different.

I wouldn't bet against the rfa rules changing next agreement.

Sitting out the year does not make him UFA - in fact, it pushes UFA status out by a year.

Back when Tavares was an RFA, the contracts were the same.

But tell us more about your hat...

Man. I hate the Sens.

I have a feeling the 4th line contributes tonight. 4-2 Leafs final.

Tomorrow night, Sparks vs Hawks. A bit worried.

The abuse continues............

There were signs of discussion but you've killed that again. Replaced with vile abuse. You know zero about me but you tell me what I am & what I do?

This seems like history repeating, only this time we are in fact in the Leaves thread. I didn't realise it was your personal thread that allows you to throw abuse around!

I'll head to bed. Don't want anymore name calling.....

Last one before bed.

How many rfa were getting 8, 9, 10 11 12 million $ contracts back in Tavares rfa days compared to today?

Thats indeed what i read as well...

He took 1/7th of the cap for himself - lockout-insured in basically just signing-bonuses, and the other 22 players should take a discount.

- VeryModernMan

are you auditioning to replace Steve Simmons as the most ridiculously shyte disturbing moron in the environment... "a reporter who churns up crap for the sake of drawing attention to themselves"....

if so - congrats you're doing an awesome job...

next you could call one of Marner's, Matthews' or Nylander's parents to try and get the inside scoop.

and when you fail to get through to any of those parents, you could just make shyte up like the rest of the "insiders" in the TOronto "centre of the hockey universe" reporting community do.

shouldn't you be focussing on political crap in the US - which has more of a baring you're life than trying to impersonate a FoxSpew reporting in the hockey market?

"I'm hearing that of this morning Nylander is asking for 10M and a NMC and marketing rights to Auston's first born child's baby clothing line"

I would honestly love it if we traded Nylander for that pick - watching Ottawa flail all year would be so delicious if we knew it meant getting a good player.

I would be willing to throw in Bracco...
