Whether he signs for 6.5 or 7 or 8, the fact remains, he's the Leafs 4th, maybe 5th best forward, and the Leafs desperately need a top pair RHD. Eventually, he's going to have to get moved to plug that hole, regardless. The day Tavares signed, Nylander became surplus and thus trade bait as a means to an end to acquire a top pair RHD.

That's one of the dumbest ideas imaginable. Panarin is a pending UFA who has already refused to sign with any team during the season and no matter what Nylander costs, Panarin will cost more AND he's older AND he's completely unnecessary for the Leafs to acquire.

Looking like a bridge deal at this point. Forget the long term deal. If he signs long term at a good number fine - otherwise (frank) him, his agent and his old man. Bridge him for the next five years and he will never make up the money he leaves on the table to age 27.
