I was in the same boat, thought he played pretty well in Colorado.

I wonder if this does allow for one of the goalies like Lyon or Stolarz get moved. Both being on the younger side, they might have more value then Neuvirth.

Pickard is still only 26. COuld this be a sly move to have a healthy NHL back up but also a future guy for Hart next year? He is signed at $800,00 for this year so couldn't see much of a jump for next year.

Well since Toronto just lost their planned starter and backup for the Marlies, maybe Hextall will turn around and offer them their pick of Stolarz or Lyon for a 5th round pick or something lol.

My fault, for some reason I thought he wrote Neurvith. Maybe I just wanted to see that instead.

To my knowledge Stolarz isn't hurt

Not even the local circus claimed Weise. Now he is going to make his line mates look worse on the Phantoms.🤧

This is how I see it:

Neuvirth is gone after this year.

Stolarz is unknown at the moment, has decent potential to play in the NHL, but the team needs to see how he bounces back after injury.

Lyon had some good games in the NHL, but is no more than depth.

Hart is hopefully the starter of the future, but the Flyers need someone next year to either start while Hart gets wet or to backup if he falters a bit. That's where Elliott and Pickard come into play. I assumed the Flyers would wait later in the season or next offseason to pick up another goalie, but it just happened sooner. Pickard has an edge over both Lyon and Stolarz with experience and probably talent. Just like Mrazek last year, they will see how he plays and offer a contract later this season if he plays well. That means they let Elliott walk or they re-sign Elliott if Pickard doesn't cut it.

Update: Sandstrom comes over next year to be Phantom starter.

Laughton and Raffl would be the only two I'd bring back. It's going to be another fun year to watch the Phantoms too
- YuenglingJagr

I’m not sure I would bring either guy back. Laughton to me is a titanic disappointment after taking him in the first round and has become ineffective at center. Raffl is stale.

I’ve nece viewed Weise as a guy who doesn’t try. I view him as someone who is getting older and just isn’t good. He showed absolutely nothing in Chicago and we signed him anyway.

Really like the Pickard move. This is a 100-point team and it needed to make sure the goaltending didn't kill them

And I agree with TSN...this probably the best offseason move the Flyers made. I am just glad they didn't claim McBackup or Sparkles.

I don't disagree but unless he's willing to sign a one year deal for 19-20, I'd pass. I just think that they are very close to having younger, faster, cheaper and better options.
- BiggE

I agree. I think Hextall has one year to build a legitimate contender. The points you bring up is why I would sign Simmonds. We have the money. We have the space. There will always be injuries. The holes we need filled shouldn’t cost us from signing Simmonds.

Can someone help me understand the love folks have for Pikard and why he's better than what we already have?

I fear this means Neuvirth will be on the shelf for a while

Nothing to be afraid of about that. I have no problems with the player personally, and I would assume unless someone tells me differently that he is a good person, hard worker, good teammate.

But at some point, it's business. A profession. Part of it means being available. You have to be available to play.

There is no way anyone following this team the past two years can say that they trust Neuvirth to be available to play at the consistency of other goaltenders. Because the Flyers couldn't do that either, to me, this was a move that had to happen

they literally just updated his timeline saying he was going on the trip with the team and could be ready for home opener...

Neuvy has been skating and will make trip to Vegas. May be ready for home opener, but that seems doubtful.

It is probably a good thing they don't rush him, but I have doubts this is a move that is meant for just a few games

It's a great low risk reward. They either find a goaltender that can play a serviceable role that won't impede the progress of Hart, but give him competition. If he doesn't work out then he gets waived and let go at end of year by giving up zero assets.
