Sens are never gonna get anything decent fro Ryan, so naming him captain and lessening the likelihood he get traded, has zero impact.

Habs could get solid assets for Weber, now, they will just watch him quickly decline into mediocrity over the next 2 years... If he is not constantly injured.

I don't think naming him captain means he won't get dealt in the next 24 months, pretty sure he still gets moved, eventually

If the Habs were winning important games, great move. The Habs won't be winning important games for 3-4-5 years.

So yeah, let's keep an aging D-man on the decline with injury problems in the middle of a rebuild.

Great (frank)ing asset management.

I hear ya but like I said, I don't think naming him captain means he will be around for the duration of the contract... They won't trade him this season and although I agree it's not the right call making him C, it won't make a difference 2 years from now when they decide to flip him

Funny how Burns is considered awesome at 33 but Weber is old garbage and needs crutches. I understand the trade was bad and I would love to have P.K., but Weber is still an elite defenseman.

The guy has 9 straight healthy seasons in a row before last year. Not exactly injury prone. Didn’t markov have two knees rebuilt at 38? Weber has never been a speedy defenseman. He’s arguably the best defensively in the league, gets the puck out quick, and has a booming shot. More importantly, he intimidates the opposition.

Weber still has a good 5 years in him, but obviously not as good as he was at 27. Look at the impact chara just had at 40.

It's more about the make up of the current team, Burns plays on a real good team with hopes of competing now, Weber should be moved to a similar situation

I'm not saying he is terrible. But I agree he is not even close to being as good as he was 2-3 years ago.

What I am saying is that when the Habs are good(*), he will be done. Who gives a (frank) what he brings to the rink now - it is of no benefit to the team. Their playoff, let alone cup, chances are not vastly improved in any way whatsoever. It makes ZERO difference.

It is this kind of small minded management philosophy that will always keep the Habs as a mediocre team.

(*) If they their prospects pan out and MB does not do any other stupid / bad trades.
