We've replaced JvR, Bozak, Polak and now McElhinney with Leivo, Gauthier, Marincin and Sparks.... We're so screwed..

Carrick should have been kept over Marincin. No one would take him on waivers
- Ravenz93

With so many teams' rosters "set," this might be the only time he clears. Try to waive him later and a team with an injury or with players underperforming might grab him as insurance.

Gotta think that someone claims Pickard.
Not sure who has a need at back up at this point though.

That's what I think. Few know what they really have yet in regard to these depth guys.

Pirce's injuries are directly related to W's and L's.

I'm not sure the Press box D and 13th forward matter that much. For cap reasons alone, I'd have probably waived Gauthier and Marincin as well. They're not going to play.

For backup, I don't love the decision, but it sends . . . I guess a good message? It's sort of a mixed message. On one hand, it points out to the Marlies that if you play well there, you get a deserved promotion to the Leafs. But it also says that if you crap the bed in training camp, it doesn't matter.

I think it also says if you're over 30 and aren't Marleau, you should keep your bags packed.

In front of a Marlies team who all played horrible. No effort from anyone in any of their games whatsoever.

He would look better with the Leafs lineup in front of him, obviously that's just my opinion.

Agreed, but Sparks and McBackup played in the same game. Sparks did not play so hot.

Something to argue about for the next 8 or 9 weeks.

Sparks has bad rebound control and bad decision making. The guy is just never going to be a solid nhl backup.
Can see mcbackup clearing waivers (league knows he wants to stay in toronto) so i can understand that decision to some extent - but definitely a bad decision to keep sparks over pickard.

- plantheparade

I dont know enough to say that myself, based on the AHL results Id like to see.
It would suck to waive him and have a team pick him up and become a decent nhl goalie. Would be nice to draft a goalie and see one make the NHL.

Or at least an LTIR accompanied by a trade request. Price pays a team $4M a year to take him.

If McBack gets through waivers (and he is more likely to get through based on age and contract), he can then be brought up/down until he has played 9 games without needing to go through waivers again. That is about 1/3 to 1/2 the season the way he gets used. So he could still be the backup giving them control over Sparks and a chance to trade him when another team gets an injury or gets fed up with their back up. Asset control. Also, Sparks is likely a lot better than his couple of preseason games suggested.

Its not sparks over mcbackup this just gives the leafs more time to see if sparks is really as sh!tty as hes been so far.
They could easily still stick with mcbackup and waive sparks in a month

- Fakepartofme

right, I am just saying who to put on waivers and risk the chance of losing them...right now

I am no way convinced Sparks will be any NHL goalie, but you have to give him a chance imo

I'm here nor there with the backups, but certainly not disappointed they kept Sparks. They've invested a lot of money and time on the guy - Sparles needs to show what he has, and if nothing...time to move on.
