If they're that useless (and I don't think they are), then what value would they have fetched from other teams? Surely if they were so insignificant to the team, we would've been lucky for conditional 7th rounders for them.
- gravyface

Useless to the Leafs (future), not to other GMs out there making mistakes at the deadline like the Leafs did with Boyle and Plekanec.

I'm guessing; if Matthews' would've performed like 'normal', Leafs would likely have won that series...
- 21peter

But he didn't because Boston shut him down.

This is exactly the case. The Leafs best players were very young, Boston's best players (exception Pastrnak) were veterans. That, and the 3-games to Kadri, hurt. They definitely had a chance though. It is beyond ridiculous to look at a lead going into period 3 of game 7 and conclude they had no chance and they somehow should have just assumed they had no chance and given up at the trade deadline. There is NO argument that supports that idea.

Yeah, burned out but singlehanded got us to seven.

I agree with you that Karlsson would make the Leafs that much better.
Dubas most likely called Dorion and asked what it would take to get Karlsson. Dorion most likely said "I'm not trading him to a team in our division" That's why he went to a western team. The trade even had a clause not to flip him to an Eastern team.
Let's see what this group can do even if Marincin is on the team.

- dmnted

If it was the same price, no, he doesn't trade him to Toronto. But if Toronto has the best offer on the table by a wide margin, yeah, they definitely think about it, if not do it. If the Leafs offer was good enough (Nylander+) Ottawa would have been forced to do it for the betterment of their future product.

He has to say that to save face with the bs he spewed before playoffs started

It's unimaginable that someone could continue that narrative after having seen the outcome. Yeah they had no chance of beating Boston, except for being ahead during game7. Only out come was loss in 5-6 games. The fact that it went to 7 games, with them being ahead in that game doesn't matter.

Same thing as karlsson poop. Trade nylander and gardiner and a 1st for him. Gets traded for scraps. Yeah but they still should have traded nylander for him

- burn

No kidding. And now that Nylander is sitting out in a dispute ... he's going to ask for a trade somewhere else because....................TAXES!!!!!!!!

Leafs had no intention on re-signing them, we needed that money to go towards our better players coming off of their ELC's this year and next year, plus Tavares

Also, we did have a chance at making a good run last year in playoffs, obviously it didnt turn out that way. I have no regrets. Management made the right decision imo.

- LeafGuy89

So if they had no intention of signing them (unlike Carlson in Washington) then trade him and give the young guys more ice time.

They really didn't have a good chance, they were lucky to make it to game 7.

But he was overplayed and worn out but still carried the team?
- sloppyseconds2

Fatigue possibly made him inconsistent. He started weak and ended weak in game 7. Doesn't mean he was useless the entire time, just not capable of doing it the whole time.

Karlsson is going to make MUCH more than Nylander.

Go look at the Leafs cap after M and M are signed.

Do a little research and a little math.

... unless you think we should be giving up Nylander for a rental Karlsson. If that is the case, I got nothing. You are beyond help.

Dude, just fcuk off with this.

The reality of what happened PROVES you wrong, beyond a shadow of a doubt. They were leading going into the 3rd period of game 7.

That does NOT, by any logic or circumstance = little chance of beating Boston. Absolutely nothing you argue, changes that reality; nothing.

So, for once, just give the (frank) up. I won't be dragged down a rat hole with you on this issue. You are wrong. Don't continue to make more of an azs of yourself with this crap.

- Aetherial

They got their asses kicked for the majority of the series, Andersen stole a couple games so they didn't get beat in 5. Then they choked in game 7.

End result? They lost and got outplayed.

He wasn't really at his best the first 4 games, part of the reason they were down 3-1 and his game 7 performance wasn't the best either. So for the majority of the series, yeah, he wasn't as good as he usually is. Nothing anyone here has said disproves that.

Ug is a simpleton. Just look at who won the cup, who called that? Besides Ug that is
- shack67

We play the same style as Tampa, a run and gun team with not much physicality. But for whatever reason we didn't stand a chance against Boston cause they play the right way. Then they get spanked by Tampa

And that's fine. They have Sandin, Liljegren and Dermott all on ELCs. Rielly on a great deal too. They could afford him. Marleau will be retiring soon. Hainsey will be gone. Gardiner would be gone. There is plenty of money to lock up legitimate, world class players and fill the rest of the line-up with cheap, ELC players.

It’s easy to get frustrated with this fool but it plays right into his hands. I really don’t think he believes what he says because nobody is that dumb.

Except Tampa Bay had the better offense, the better defense and the better goalie so...yeah...maybe there's a reason Tampa Bay finished 1st in the East and the Leafs didn't. Maybe because Tampa Bay was better?

But but but but I thought it was their defence that wasn't good enough for the Leafs to beat Boston or Tampa Bay, even though the team that's did (and won the cup) had an arguably worse defence than Toronto.

You need to start admitting when you're wrong instead of trying to argue your way out of every hole you dig.
