I have watched almost all of the preseason games so far and have been following hockey closely since the early 70s (yup I'm old ). Had family members make it to the show, albeit in a limited role (backup goalie for the Blackhawks in the bad years) and did some coaching when my son played minor hockey and the one thing that I've learned in all of this is not to place too much importance on the outcome of the games (winning vs losing) or even who rips it up scoring wise or who struggles in the preseason.
BUT what gets me so far is that there has not been a lot of guys looking like they want to make the team, other than Motte. The effort through most of the games has been horrible. There was one game where I read Gaudette (and I think the kid has a bright future) played and I was stunned because when I watched the game I didn't notice him once. I guess that could be good to as it meant he didn't make any glaring errors. But I have to believe the team is looking for growth from within and so far it looks like even that is too much to ask.

True...I hate Hutton but he has been ok other than the first game. Slightly less fat. Pouliot has been way to weak defensively and I’d have no issues sending him down

Nah, he’s Green’s boy from the WHL and scored a decent amount of points last year(by this team’s standards)

And not like there’s been a Motte type of effort from any of the bubble dmen

At this point Green is basically deciding who’s sucked the least

If this was 2010 and he was on that team, he’d be gone by now.

Pouliot does look like he’s in better shape at least, less of a chubby face. His fitness and defense was why Pit fans wanted him gone.

We don’t really have anyone other than Pouliot and Edler that can score. Probably stuck with him until Hughes arrives

No teams roster is 23 of their own drafted players.

We have hit home runs Hughes Pettersson and Boeser all first round picks. We have also had a few swing and misses ( IMO). If in the next two years we can draft get two more home run players then we are doing very good.

The plan is to get more top 40 picks ,they are the ones that will change the look.

1st and 2nd round picks have always been hard to acquire via trade in recent years. And I agree, no team, successful or not, is made up of all drafted players, but having said that, I still think its best to build from within, and use trades to fill in complimentary pieces. I hope, that moving forward, Benning has a better sense of how free agency works, and unplugs his phone come free agency

"Waive them... waive them all...."

Stetcher has been the best of the 3 I think.

They become hard to acquire when you wait until one day before TDL to ask Hamhuis if he would like to waive. They become hard to obtain when your GM says he won't ask anyone to waive their NTC.

Gretky and Orr got traded but Canucks and their rich history refused to trade our superstars like Edler Sedins Tanev .

To get high end draft picks you need to make Sutter sized balls moves and move out top end players after they peak.

Stetcher has always been the one I’ve hated the least I guess. I think he has better hockey sense than the other 2 but he’s so small and doesn’t have the elite skill needed to make up for it.

On a bad team, I can live with him as a bottom pairing dman.

Name me one fourth round pick drafted by the Canucks in the last 15 years still playing with them ?

An article

Beyond the First Round
When you look at players drafted in later rounds, the NHL dream begins to fade in a hurry.

From 1990 to 1999, about a quarter of the players selected in the second round turned into NHL career players.
Those drafted in the third round and beyond are really up against it. From over 2,000 players selected in the third round and beyond during the 1990s, just 261 made it as NHL career players. That's about 12 percent.

Do you think it’s possible, and I’m just spit balling here, that it isn’t the effort, or “compete” level that’s the problem, but the actual skill level of the players themselves. I mean, maybe Gaudette (your example) is actually trying his best, but just isn’t good enough for the NHL?

great scene but the animal that made that pile would have to be the size of a 747.
