This is going to get a bunch of eye rolling type responses over feelings and whatnot, but unless Benning can find an AHL team willing to play Nilsson on loan, I can't see them making a claim. I definitely think they should, but I do think the organization respects Bachman too much to demote/move him from Utica

wouldn't really be a point. He is on his last year, and we have cap space and contract space.

that's also a testament to the forward depth/strength of Nashville though too.

We can "what if" all day long but management felt this was the best way to do it and I dont necessarily disagree with them.

What i do disagree with is the fact that it took them so long to accept to come to this point. Its a much bigger hole to climb out of now.

Also:

Nylander was my pick over Virtanen
Tkachuk over Juolevi

Imagine:

Tkachuk Pettersson Boeser
Baertschi Horvat Nylander
Eriksson Sutter Goldobin
Rousell Beagle Schaller

Defense group wouldnt be any different that it is now but that looks like a more balanced forward group......

Virtanen + Juolevi for Nylander?

I am in agreement with most posters on here about the D, but I want to know who was available that we had the assets or the interest(from free agents) to sign? I'm legitimately asking as I can't recall anyone we could have got.

Buy-out window is closed, I believe. Would have to go through mutual contract termination and I doubt Nilsson would give up $2 million when he might not get a next deal

So the question has to be why are they so loyal to scraps?
- bloatedmosquito

This is actually a very good question. I don't believe they are loyal to all scraps, but for some reason they hold scraps with good "character" in very high regard. To me, these types of moves look like the ones teams with room issues make; which is strange given the leadership they have had for the past 10+ years

I think most clubs do that to a degree. I mean, Smith just got waived in Ottawa, and duchene said it was a kick in the balls. There is something to be said about “character” guys, especially if there are room/team issues. Different story when you’re winning though.

My take is that the team has always been full of scraps since the beginning. Our senior management always hires ex Canuck scraps to run the club. Executive scrubs are attracted to player scraps as they can relate. It’s a vicious scrap cycle that won’t end until we get a new owner that will hire scrapless people that haven’t played for this scrap organization. I hope this makes sense
- CanuckDon

The scouting department employs Aquilini's favourite player as a kid, Marc Crawford's dad, a bunch of scrubs from the 80s, Jimbo's kid. Steamer is head of college scouting, Johnson (scrap player who was AWFUL) is the figurehead of the AHL team, Baumgartner was a depth Dman who played for the team a little and he's the best guy to run the defence coincidentally, Malhotra, Cloutier, Jason King Curtis Sanford all have jobs with the team.

It sounds worse than it is until you look around the league and just about every scouting department/support staff is full of people's kids, friends, fathers and former players. It plagues the entire league. Scrubs need the money after they retire so that's why you get them, stars don't.

Heck, in Edmonton you basically can't even get hired as an intern if you're not related to someone on the team. They literally hold positions open in case someone up top has a kid who needs a job.

Because people have biases and one of the most common biases in management anywhere is for bosses to hire people that remind them of themselves.

So if you have a former scrap plug running your team, its more likely he's going to favour more scrap plugs over skilled players.

Agreed, it’s a problem league wide. Old boys club. This org needs a fresh vision and somebody willing to think outside the box.

The team isn't desperate for wingers either and regardless of where you stand on OJ, he's the only legit top 4 prospect in the organisation besides Hughes.

Woo, Rathbone, Tryamkin, Utunen are all varying degrees of lottery tickets.

I have no faith in Utunen, nor Gunnarsson. Id rather JB not make those euro D picks in late rounds.

I doubt JB actually scouts these guys as much as his Euro scouts do.

Late round picks are more on the scouts than the GM. But yeah, the way this team scouts dmen at all levels needs to be re-evaluated lol.

Gunnarsson is a write off at this point. Guy can't stick handle.

But Utunen might have enough to be a decent depth defender.

Agreed, it certainly is a trend among bad teams. We often comment here about how many mentors the team actually needs and Vancouver has wasted a lot of money and time on subpar players with character. That focus I think hurt the direction, especially after 2012 when the opportunity to make bold moves with assets was there
