Zack Smith will clear waivers and be traded for Michael Stone.

You heard it here first.

So, why would they not just do a straight trade? What purpose do the waivers serve?

This tear down would be so great if we had a fvcking 1st round pick this year...

I get wanting to go with a youth movement, but ya, you're right, probably not the best time to go youth movement with colorado having your 1st.

if he clears they have the ability to keep in him the AHL to start the year and in this case, Flames would be creating cap room by doing so

I don't know how they get either of them to stay. They will both be wined and dined next summer. Duchene is definitely gone - he's obviously not super happy to be in Ottawa and hasn't been there very long so he has no real emotional ties to the place. Stone, being where he's at in his career could easily go be a top six guy on a contending team with much better management and a better locker room.
- WaterVsAnchor

Both Stone and Duchene have set themselves up for huge paydays.

Stone I've heard a few times from multiple people that he wants to be here long term. But the reason he only signed a one year was because he didn't get a long with Karlsson. So now Karlsson is gone hopefully they will sign Stone.

Duchene has openly said that Ottawa is as close to home as he'll get and he loves it here. He is the one I think will get the biggest payday.

jesus guy, thats just one of those stupid hockey fandom wild internet rumours that always happens with a big name player leaves.

Oh he was traded, he was sleeping with that guys wife, or he didnt like that guy, etc etc.

Mark stones wife was tweeting support for the Karlssons in the Hoffman bullying scandal, I would highly doubt there was bad blood b/w them the the Karlssons

But do two guys want to spend the primes of their careers on a tear down/rebuild team? That is really the question or not. Close to home is one thing, but I'd imagine being on a winning team + money factor in for most hockey players before being close to your parents.

Yes but rebuilds involve the need for synchronicity between age and payroll. What we are seeing in Ottawa is a complete crash in player costs. If Stone and Duchene each bring back a first round pick (or prospect) you build on the long term development window and cut about $150m of long term contingent liability off the balance sheet.

It is really important to understand that $150m off the books makes refinancing so much easier going forward. Good chance that money carved off of the contingent liabilities can go directly into Melnyk's pocket on the sale of the team.

This team isnt in some cloak and dagger process of being sold, you need to realize that you are stuck with Meylynk and Dorion for the forseeable future

You guys think that maybe Duchene and Stone are just super pissy at the team as a whole and any move of players out will upset them at this point?

People keep wanting outcomes to be different than Melnyk's guideline where he said up to 16 new faces in lineup by this time next year (10 new faces by opening night this year).

Not a fan of Melnyk but people make a mistake by not listening to what he is saying.

This is a comprehensive rebuild with a complete tear down as part of the bottoming out process.

Sens are a development team for the next three years. They have slashed player budgets. It will make the financials look incredibly attractive for the sale of the team.

Resigning Stone or Duchene to long term deals makes no sense at this time.

Fans need to decide to enjoy the rebuild and the growth of the kids. If not, you are going to be very unhappy for the next few years.

Trust me when I tell you that this will be the only outcome, regardless of your expectations.

Duh, it has been entirely obvious what has been happening.

People forget they tried to move Karlsson last February (along with Ryan).

The idea that this is being done for some other reason than financial structuring is ludicrous. The rebuild will flower, but make no mistake the primary reason for doing this is a financial restructuring.

It also is important to know that in order to harness the benefits of this financial reorganization you need to fit it under the umbrella of a recpapitaization, or a full change of ownership by sale or a restructuring under CCAA.

He keeps talking about the sens young players.. as if there are eichels and dahlins or matthews and Marners in the sens system. Or even their own first round pick this year to land that type of talent.

Silly fans like spatso need to realise all teams have young players and prospects but they're not all created equal.

blah, blah, blah .... "guidelines" "comprehensive rebuilds" ... These stupid fvcks should have had "guidelines" for a lottery protected pick. So this year is a write-off, then we have another 4-5 years of a rebuild? Not to mention the toxic environment the whole organization is.

He might have a point...if the kids were named McDavid or Laine..

Just ignore spatso. He's using his delusions to paint a rosey picture that doesnt exist and to hide the shame of switching from being a Leaf fan to a sens fan, given the state of the two teams.

I don't get how you can be so sure that Melnyk has been trying to sell. As far as I know, he's never said anything indicating a desire or willingness to sell the team. Furthermore, Travis Yost did some pretty good investigating a few years ago that showed the Senators were one of only a few of Melnyk's business holdings that actually makes money. I think you're really setting yourself up for a massive disappointment.

i get the point of cost cutting but stripping the roster down and having an empty building is a ploy to lure prospective buyers? as opposed to a winning team with playoff revenue and sell outs?

spatso is just reaching and spewing his usual nonsensical drivel.
