I'd be fine with letting them play in the preseason and then the suspension starts in the regular season. The NFL allows suspended players to play in the preseason, or at least they used to.

NHL preseason is useless for guys that will 100% make the team. They barely play as it is, and that's in games they're actually even dressed.

They just need to make it so the suspension means that you're suspended from all team activities until the end of the suspension. So not only do you miss the 5 remaining preseason games, but you miss the remainder of training camp too.

Then the coach has a tough decision to make about whether or not to dress a player on opening night who only has a handful of practices under his belt in the last six months.
