Its funny cuz i had it out with Russ on the buzz who for some reasons believes the Sens can b a playoff team (im not kidding) In NE case i dont really care when the Sens "decided" they were going to do the rebuild... i saw the writing on the wall for this team when they dumped Turris for basically free (a 2nd right?) & than for some very strange reason they move their 1st rounder for Matt freaking Duchene!! Now all im saying is when i saw this trade go down my jaw hit the floor...

Basically whats his face goalie went on thew hottest streak i have ever seen (22 straight games) & the Sens beat all odds to squeak into the playoffs this one time... this gave them the notion that they were a competent & capable team..?? As far as im concerned ottawa's "true rebuild" begun the day they dumped Alfie, followed by Spezza...&& there answer was to sign Bobby..?? Besides the year Ottawa went to the finals (& even than) i have never thought this was a good team so no idea why they think that...

On a final note another player Ottawa let go unfortunately was Martin Havlat...he never found more success but he was great in Ottawa

if Melnyk really gives a crap... (which I doubt).. then he should be pushed to sign a few of the remaining FreeAgents... to insulate and protect the kids that you have. No sense rushing a Chabot or whomever if not ready... not for a season that's essentially lost. Signing a few of those guys might allow the Sens to climb a bit out of the basement and make the lost 1st rounder less painful.

Melnyk doesn't care about rushing kids. They're on ELC contracts, good for his budget.

And no, the Sens are not a playoff team. He's deluded.

When you say "lock", what do you mean?

A lock to go 1st overall or a lock to be an impact player?

I think he means that the Sens pick is a lock to get Hughes.

It's a lock to get a very good young player, but not a lock to get the first overall.

Direct quotes from the National Post article, Ottawa Sun and from TSN webcast with Dorion on the reasoing behind the Karlsson trade.

https://nationalpost.com/...d7-4de9-a2bd-01e1abc49c41

"Pierre Dorion indicated the Senators made their former captain a "legit" long-term offer on July 1 and essentially got no response from Karlsson’s camp.

Senators offered Karlsson an eight-year, $88 million deal and he didn’t show any inclination to sign the deal and that’s a big reason why he was dealt to the San Jose Sharks Thursday in a deal that included players, prospects and picks.

I’ve done a lot of contract negotiations. When there’s so little talk, when you’re trying to negotiate with a player, you know you’re not going to get a contract done.

So we felt it was the right thing to do after we offered him, not a hometown discount contract."
