I don't know how you came up with me downplaying mental issues because I put it in quotation marks. There are tons of mental issues and how they come about are very different, that's why I put it in quotation. I wasn't talking about a specific mental illness.
Not every drug user is an addict.
According to the guy in the video, it's not people's perception of treating addiction/drug use it is society itself that is doing it to people.
I volunteer and sit and talk with people, once a week. I usually watch a baseball game with a 50 year old who takes his clothes off and lays down on the floor when he doesn't get his way. Family is encouraged to come visit family or friend's that are there.
The guy talking about people that don't get hooked when they are in the hospital. It's different when medical personnel are giving you the drugs compared to being at home and you can self medicate to your hearts content.

When you put things in quotation marks that aren't quotes, it reads as air quotes, as if you are undermining what you're saying. That's what "she" said. I'm not implying that's what you meant, only that's how it reads. In your first paragraph above you didn't put them in quotes, so it reads as normal flow. Talking about mental health issues, or talking about "mental health issues".
And I didn't read back through all the posts, so only talking about what I read from.
Society isn't doing it to anyone, it's not giving people drugs; however it's not currently set up (through stigmas, laws, and increasing disconnection) in driving people to cope on their own through various vices: TV, social media, alcohol, drugs, etc. Getting professional help is hard, both financially and emotionally, for most people... coupled with less support systems for individuals, it's easier to understand the escape towards drugs that people choose.
Then again, some people are just more inclined towards highs and addictions than others are, so cleaving this subject as black and white is a bit misguided (though not saying you are).
