I enjoy some Star Trek, but I am far from a trekkie. Huge portions of the Star Wars franchise are just straight up awful

If I asked you to name a good Star Wars movie outside of the original 3 what would you say?

- NorthNuck

Rogue One was fantastic. Haven't seen Solo yet...heard it was good but not as good as Rogue One.

The prequels and Disney stuff is all pretty bad but has moments. It's ironic that people are actually saying the prequels are better than the Disney 'trilogy' so far. Considering Lucas took so much flak for the prequels.

As soon as they decided the SWEU was non-canon was when I gave up on Disney-Lucasfilm. There was a lot in the books/comics that is lightyears better than the drek JJ Abrams/Rian Johnson et. al came up with. Hell, why couldn't they just do Heir To The Empire trilogy which had a really great story and continued the saga and introduced new chars to the Universe?
- DariusKnight

Bang-on. They missed the most glorious opportunity to introduce the biggest villain since Vader. The Thrawn Trilogy would have been absolutely outstanding if it was put to film properly from the books. Those three books by Timothy Zahn are still regarded as the pinnacle of Star Wars novels today. What a missed opportunity.

rogue one, Solo and e.7 are the next best. in that order. I enjoyed all three more than I enjoyed a new hope. outside of how mind blowing that movie was, opening up a whole new universe when you go back and watch it a second time it's not great. IMO the order is

Empire
RTJ
Rogue
EP.7
A new hope

I might even slide solo above hope, it's a fun movie. Not much substance, but fun.

- neem55

I'll admit I didn't see Solo, after seeing ep 8 I was getting exhausted of wasting my time watching disaster after disaster, plus I saw how awful the reviews were.

I'm just of the opinion that the universe of Star Wars simply isn't that well fleshed out or interesting. The original trilogy was a pretty decent contained story and watching Disney squeeze every possible insignificant storyline out of it while purely cashing in on nostalgia is disgusting

They're right. And the prequels were terrible. The new movies are such awful pieces of film-making they actually fall under that low bar

I also liked the Rogue Squadron books, that would have made a PERFECT TV side story series if they wanted stuff to put on other media than movies.

Pretty sure they can (and will) go back and fill in any gaps they like. Don't be surprised when the franchise reaches 100 films...

Easy, episodes 2 to 8, plus rogue squadron and solo are all very well done movies. If you follow the jar jar is a sith lord theory, episode one is also a good movie.

Three great movies, Rogue, Empire, and Awakens. Could put any of the originals in there but I spread it out.
You can't remove a third of the epic and tell me the isn't any great movies. In itself that tells me that you agree they're great movies, especially a new hope before greedo shot first.
That's like saying pick a nhl all star team but no Canadiens.

I'm really hoping to see grand admiral Thrawn and Mary Jade, the emperors hand, in episode 9.

Says the guy who likes star trek
What percentage of that universe is garbage?

Considering that no star wars movie outside of episode 1 is garbage, your arguments hold no weight sir.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Can't we enjoy both as a fan of the scifi genre?

The original Trek movie and the one where they went off to discover god were pretty bad. The new Abrams films are certainly spectacular, and the characters are pretty good.

For sure. Remember all the Boston fans with their heads swelling last year when they acquired Nash for the PO's?

Guy was invisible.

He has always been invisible when it counts but he gets a pass because he is “big and Canadian .” Guy is a clown!

I agree, just people who haven't even watched the whole epic multiple times but enjoy star trek and comment disparagingly about the superior universe irritate my rational side.

I'm not a huge star trek fan, I've only watched parts of 2 of the series, I just generally liked the episodes I've seen. I would never describe myself as a trekkie or compare the 2 universes they're so different it's like apples and oranges

Nope, I've generalized you into a treky, go forth or prosper.

How are they different, explain it please?

lol true but with Disney at the helm I fear they will take 97 tries to get 3 films correct.

Episode 1, awful.

Episode 2, fun battle sequences but poor writing and poopty plot.

Episode 3, so much cringe. Bad acting bad writing but pretty visuals to distract from that.

Episode 7, JJ Abrams mystery box formula with no pay off at the end. Overplaying their hand in terms of pushing the diversity aspect.

Episode 8, Took the very little that was good about ep 7 and threw it out the window. Made terrible use of characters from the originals, pandered to the audience with half the movie wasted on a random and useless "save the animals" plotline.

One is a fantasy story about characters with magical powers and quests to save princesses and the other is an abstract look at humanities social issues with the guise of a sci fi show?

The first two Abrams films were very good 'Star Trek' and 'Into Darkness' with Cumberbach playing Kahn...very good.

That 3rd one though 'Beyond'...not so well done.

I only saw the first 2 but I thought they were pretty much cash grabs. They basically wrote an action movie and slapped star trek names on it. Nothing wrong with the movies themselves but it really wasn't star trek at all.

Ya true they were kind of like an 'alternate universe' stories which I get was cool and all but by the 3rd film it was already saturated.
