You two seem to have an intense love-affair...

I want to suggest a nice little 80ies Aussie-song to chill out this day:
"Mental As Anything - Live It Up!"

First heard that song sitting in a pub in New Zealand drinking Steinlager in a small town next to Mt Hutt. Over there with a mate skiing there & the ski fields around the magnificent Queenstown. Loved the song ever since.

When the Pens won the cup in '09, here around 5am early in the morning, i turned on the radio, and that song was played! I'm in love since then.

First one, Americans are not hard enough for hockey after midnight! Btw., in Australia games are somewhere between breakfast and lunch?!

Depending on summer time hours, the normal east coast 8pm starts over there are at 9am here or as late as 11am through their winter. The west coast games start early afternoon.

So is the 'er' on Deutsche masculin? Is the 'e' feminine similar to French?

Absolutely correct!

But "normal" ET-games start 7pm, playoffs often 7:30pm.

Ok, the 7pm puck off ranges between 9am & 11am here depending on who is in summertime hours - there or here. We go through a period where they start at 9am, then 10am as they go back to winter hours then 11am when our summertime or daylight savings (As its called here), kicks in.

Yes I checked the language spelling with a client of mine who is Deutche. She explained it.

I spent some time up in Hamburg a few times where a mate was living with his German wife. Very hospitable people you Germans. Have you ventured down to Austria? I was in Waidring with that same mate who somehow swindled his way into being a ski instructor there, for a couple of trips between footy in France. Spent Xmas eve there the first trip over - absolutely brilliant place.

Often, Austria (this is where Thomas Vanek is from btw.) is much more compatible to us Bavarians than the coast-guys from Hamburg - its more or less the other side of the Alps. I know a lot of people having been to Australia or New Zealand for a longer journey or even two-three semesters of study, and they all are swarming about it. I sadly just know Surfers Paradise (CART), Adelaide/Melbourne (F1) and Philip Island (Moto), where all the Grand Prix were/are.

Yes I flew into/out of Munchen both times I went to Waidring. I know how close it is - you lucky bastard.

The biggest race over here has to be the Bathurst 1000. It's huge. All the drivers want to win it due to its history. About 3 hours west of Sydney. My family drove around the track with a caravan when I was about 8.

Beautiful track... someone built it for the best F1-simulation mid 90ies (F1GP2), and i had a lot of fun with it - especially the "inner part" after the big uphill.

And mid 90ies, Munich was also much better and familary... now we're floated with people which are greeted at Australians coasts with "STAY OUT!"...

The 'stop the boats' slogan won an election for the Liberal party here! Absolute insanity thinking the major issue a political party was going to concentrate on was stopping illegally immigration. Don't worry about health & education, or major infrastructure or looking after our pensioners etc - just stop the boats!

As soon as they won the election their first action was to silence any & All reporting on illegal immigration. No one heard anything about any boats coming in as there was a media blackout. That after them sending a bus around Australia before the election with a huge update with how many illegal immigrants were enetering each day! After the media blackout, they claimed they stopped the boats!

They should just shoot people smugglers!

You're not even giving him a chance? I mean, he's only played 12 seasons in the NHL.
Seems pretty foolish to assume these things based on very large samples sizes, no?

- Rinosaur

12 seasons is just a microcosm of a player's career. We got the real bobby orr here.

I disagree. Same as I disagreed with Palat having top line caliber seasons.

It's pretty arrogant saying a GM is incompetent when you don't know the entire history of a trade. You don't know what circumstances surround decisions - & will never know.

'Every debate ends with GM's knowing more than us? Well I'd like some evidence on that little beauty. Sure I've said a lot of times the 'coach' knows more than us while he played certain players which is 100% correct, & from time to time GM's are paid to do things & know things we don't. It's a stretch to say every debate & in fact pretty much wrong.

My reply was to an opinion that Wilson values Ruhwedel & Johnson equally by putting the / in there. Can I not put out there that $ would indicate Johnson has more value than Ruhwedel?

I think you are wrong to say Ruhwedel is better than Johnson, but that's my opinion.

Edit: Do I think according to your logic, that Sid isn't as good as Tavares & Stamkos & Kopitar? Youre in need of a holiday if you think I think that!

- Aussiepenguin

No, absolutely not. A players price tag doesn't necessarily mean their on ice performace is worth what they're paid or that their automatically better than someone paid less because they're paid more. Is that what you mean by value?

If you said (put out there) that $ would indicate that JJ is paid more than Ruhwedel, then you'd be correct haha.

Now if both Rudy and JJ play at a similar level, then Rudy would have much more VALUE because he's paid a lot loss.

We can hopefully expect way more offense-contribution from JJ... when he plays just a Rudy, this would be obviously a big disappointment. And as Cole was a no-go in Sully's mind (indeed he took way too many penalties...) the question arises: Who should we have signed for that price instead of him? But hell, those 5 years in each case look very UFA-frenzymistic.

Well...Rudy isnt a bad player. In fact I really like what he brings in a bottom pair role. The thing is, he's paid accordingly for that level of play. I hope I'm wrong but I dont see JJ being that much better than Rudy if at all. JJ is definitely bigger and uses body more than Rudy but that doesn't necessarily mean the team will be better overall with JJ on the ice instead of Rudy. Having said all of that JJ will get time on one of the PP units every game I imagine, so he will have a better opportunity to produce more than Rudy ever did.

Of course with the way injuries play out, especially with the Pens, JJ and Rudy will probably be a pair at some point haha.

Nice to read that you enjoyed your experience. The only thing that really sucks here is that everyone just cares about soccer...
Yourself are from Colorado, also with mountains in front of the door (as seen with the ski-events in winter)?

Yeah its a pretty sweet place we had a blast. One night we ate in a small tavern type place in a neighborhood where we were staying about 10 miles south of Salzburg. Family owned place, but the son found out we were from Pittsburgh, he was stoked if we were Pens fans and asked about Crosby. He lost his sh!t when i told him i know who Vanek was.

Live in CO now. Its pretty sweet, the skiing is amazing but getting way to crowded to try on the weekends these days. Much different than Bavaria though. Its a high desert with prairie lands and little rain. The mountains get a ton of snow, but the rest of the area and around Denver is pretty dry.

When i was a pupil back in school, we went to our final graduation-trip to Prague/Czech mid 90ies, and sitting in a small pub i mentioned that i'm a big fan of #68 Jagr to the bartender, and the whole pub went really crazy giving us a very heartly welcome!

Thanks for your interesting landscape-lines about Colorado... when i think about it, i often have John Denver in my ears ("Rocky Mountain High"...).

I get what both you & Vic are saying. It's a good/great point about cheap on ice performance has more value than a more expensive player that doesn't give value for money & I agree with that.

But when you talk a difference of several million $$$$ then i belive it's hard to not give the advantage to the player paid more when 1 player is playing minimum wage. That big of difference, the higher earner is doing something that warrants the considerably larger salary. You expect less from a 650k player & therefore whenever those types play well it's magnified due to the cheap cost. JR put 650k value on Ruhwedel & he accepted it. Do you think he deserves more? Why wouldn't a player try & maximise his earning potential as a lot do when they down at that level of salary?

Do you think Johnson's should be getting Ruhwedel $$$?

Sure there's are bargains out there - & plenty of them. Good players getting underpaid. What was Stemniak getting paid by the Devils? Gibbons last season? In this scenario you would say Gibbons value is higher than Hagelin using your logic. Would you agree? But value isn't always a sign of talent. Would Gibbons have had that type of impact (12g 14 a), on the Pens? Probably not, & he certainly didn't when he played for the Pens. Can Ruhwedel go & play 14 seasons & keep an NHL position across several different teams like Johnson has. He hasn't so far & hes 28 years old. Other teams found Johnson was worth paying over those 14 seasons. Ruhwedel couldn't even crack a poopty Buffalo team consistently. Does that mean anything now? Maybe, maybe not. But again, to say a guy paid 650k with inconsistent NHL experience has more value than a 14 season player is not correct in my opinion. Just with that, you would play the guy that has 14 seasons first before the guy that couldn't crack Buffalo, then if the 14 season vet poops the bed, you throw your cheap alternative into the fray, because he's just that - a cheap alternative that people have low expectations for.
