let him wear it as maybe he brings some stability. No harm really.
Move to the future. He has been “honored” long enough. - rinaldo
Exactly, maybe it will end the goalie curse as well |

I always thought it made little sense to make a number off limits but not retire it.
Hart can wear a different number. It shouldn't be a huge deal and isn't even really something worth debating.

I agree with this, why rock the boat?
Ghost wore #14 all his life until he came to the Flyers and couldn't have it (for different reasons). Hasn't exactly derailed his career going with 53. |

Numbers are overrated, NHL should force players to change their numbers every year. Then they can make more money on jersey sales each year. |

As far as I know, other than the retired numbers, the only one that the team asks players to not wear is Pelle's 31. - BiggE
Is it wrong to suggest that maybe Barry Ashbee not be retired but get the same Pelle treatment? |

Those mid 80’s teams were so much fun to be a part of as a fan, they were young and entertaining. For a small guy, which was not uncommon back then, Lindbergh was a pretty agile and that mask was so old school

I have this picture framed with a ticket stub to the all star game he was in hanging behind my bed.
I never played goalie but he is one of my most influential figures in hockey. |

The practice of not giving it out for 33 years makes it more than "just a number." It was worn by a great goalie who would have brought us a cup or possibly 2. He may have gone down as the greatest in our franchise history if he played longer. IMO- Allowing Hart to wear it now puts an additional bullseye on the kid (Although from what I read, it seems he will be ready to handle the pressure). We (fans) and media would be all over him as soon as he has a bad game.
If they wanted someone to wear the number, it should have been returned to circulation a few years later.
I have no doubt Carter Hart will be a solid goalie for us, regardless of number.
Seems to be a moot point as Hart said earlier in the summer he would wear #70 or #79 with the Flyers. |

Let him wear it. If we keep banning every great Flyers player and NHL great eventually we wont have enough numbers. |

Yeah, because to a man, each and every member of the Bullies team credited Ashbee with being the glue that not only held that team together but also as being the hardest working, tough as nails warrior that set the lunch pail tone for that team. Plus, they said this about him before he died and even before he suffered his career ending injury. If you ask the members of that team they will tell you that perhaps their greatest motivation to beat Boston in 74 was to win that Cup for Ashbee. His number absolutely belongs in the rafters. |

Don't be surprised if Balmas gets one of the open contracts the Flyers have after rookie camp. I mean, its not as if they are going to sign a free agent. Balmas plays a really complete game, is big enough, and still growing, has a strong stick and is tough on the boards, and can make plays and score. He played better and better as the stakes got higher for Acadia. He could easily be a bottom six NHL wing in a few years. |
