What is the Canucks purpose of bringing in Eggenberger if they can't sign him?

He didn't play in North America last year.

Oh. I guess the rules are different. I thought they were the same for NA/EURO players.

So, because they can't sign him, why bother inviting him, which is Vantel's point.

Gives them more insight into whether they want to draft him next year I suppose. Although I can't think of an example that worked out.

My only guess is, they want to sign him to an AHL contract, then after 1 game, he has played in NA, and they can sign him to an ELC.
No idea if that is even allowed or if Benning can get creative enough to think of something outside the box.

He cant be signed due to age i believe. He will re-enter draft following year. I like them inviting him, lots of scout sites had him going in the 3rd or 4th rounds

You are probably right on the age thing.
Just wondering though if there was a way to circumvent the rules.
If you invite a player that played in NA, that was the same age, you would be eligible too sign him to an ELC, so maybe there would be a way to sign a European player, by signing them to an AHL contract, have them play in your system, then sign them to an ELC.

I dont think there is a way around the rules to signed undrafted non NA players that are still 2nd year draft eligible. Not that i know of anyway.
I think the canucks did the same thing to rodrigo abols. He was invited to camp after passed on draft, played, re-entered draft and canucks took him late in the 2016 draft.

i have a vague recollection that the team also did this before. perhaps approximately 3-5 years ago?

if i remember correctly, same situation (undrafted euro, unable to be signed, going back into draft) and the canucks didn't end up drafting him. i think he went 4-5th round to another team. not a big deal.

it's a good way to build inroads with a player and get a sense of where he is. ultimately, he's training camp fodder and hopefully he can push some of the other prospects.

yeah, it's not a big deal. Only conceivable downside I can think of is that the prospect really impresses in camp and gets his name out there since this is a hockey market, like Tkachev with the Oilers.

Might make other teams pay more attention to him this year when scouting and maybe he gets drafted next year instead of being an undrafted free agent or he gets taken a round before the Canucks were targeting him.

But otherwise, it's a free close look at a potential prospect you might want to draft next year so I think it's a fine move.

The difference though is Rodrigo was playing in North America, when he was an invitee, Portland I believe.

Yeah, Adam French wrote about him a couple of times and said he's a decent sleeper prospect who would've been a good late round pick in this year's draft.

Someone email this to Benning/Weisbrod.

Seriously.

Weisbrod was the assistant GM in Calgary when they offer sheeted ROR and would've had to waive him if the Avs didn't match it

Another month before things really get rolling, can't get here soon enough. Not really expecting much this year, probably another bottom five finish, just wanna see how well Pettersson does first and foremost.

No "probably", they'll definitely finish bottom five, and that's a good thing for their future.
