Then they are idiots
- VANTEL

i mean, demko kind of carried them last year. the team in front of him was pretty mediocre so I understand the frustration

I think it's good for the canucks though so I'm not complaining.

I'd hope that the GM who's picked 6th, 23rd, 5th, 5th and 7th does better vs the guy who picked 10th, 22nd, 29th, 26th, and 9th
- Nucker101

Well that may factor into it yes, lol, however, Gillis did have some glaring misses when drafting. His drafting was so bad!!

i hated his drafting, especially outside of the 1st round..so many overage picks and guys that weren't even on the radar

When you draft high you're obviously going to pick better players, that said, as I mentioned above, Gillis could have drafted some really good players in rounds 1-2-3....but he missed on all of them.

apples and oranges my friend, you know why

and again, you're setting the bar pretty damn low if you're judging's Benning's drafting using Gillis as a benchmark

I don't remember many complaints about his first round choices, oddly enough Horvat was his most controversial 1st rounder and it turned out to be his best

I do remember people complaining about the overage/qmjhl picks

I didn't like the Hodgson pick, his skating was a concern for me, Erik Karlsson was five picks later. Tyler Myers was the next pick. Again, a guy without a plan to build beyond the Sedin years.

The Schroeder pick, I hated because he was too small and his offensive numbers weren't where I'd like to see them despite his ranking, that's why he fell.

It just goes on and on, I wanted Boone Jenner in 2011 but he picked Jensen, I'm making myself depressed here

I didn't research the draft or think for myself back then when it came to drafts, i just followed Bob's list so I usually liked his 1st round picks except i wanted Nich/Domi/Shinakruk over Horvat because of Bob's list lol

But I hated the overage/qmjhl picks.

Yeah....example is Damon Severson being right there for the taking in 2012 but he chose overager Mallet instead because he thought they'd be ready for the NHL sooner, IDIOT. Those are really bad decisions. He could've built a nice defense for when the Sedins retired but he didn't think that far ahead.

When he picked Shinkaruk I almost threw something through the TV, I wanted them to pick Theodore so bad to build the backend up, it still upsets me. I have a hard time letting go

I also feel your pain, here is an old article from about 5 years ago, about the history of the mediocre, at best, drafting throughout Canucks history.

If Gillis had some forethought in 2008 he could've assembled some good kids for the defense and then started building the forward group.

The tears in my eyes wouldn't allow me to read any more than half of that, just shameful attempt at drafting. The single biggest reason this has been a failed franchise since its inception.

It was a tough read and had me thinking back to when i first started following draft prospects and who I was hoping for.
My 1st big disappointment was Libor Polasek, I was hoping for Valeri Bure.
So many disappointments over the years.
As much as I don't like hearing Benning stumble through his interviews, I appreciate what he has been doing at the draft table, whether I agree with his picks or not. He at least has put some decent prospects into the system, even outside of the top 2 rounds.

He's probably had one of the most favourable five years of drafting (6-23-5-5-7) as any GM in the history of the Canucks, that said, all the drafts look good until years later when you look back on them, history should tell you that.

Until I'm able to look back and see some success, his drafting is no better or worse than the last few guys. But like I said, his draft positions certainly give him a slight advantage.
