I think EK is a little disappointed. This article is 2 hours old and only 42 comments! Next his sources will tell him that GM's will double offer sheet Matthews and Marner! (e6)

If Marner is available as a RFA come next July 1st, you can bet that at least 1 team would try and offer sheet Mitch, if not several. If Marner has a big year playing besides Tavares (which I would bet he will), he could be looking at a contract of close to 10M/per. Dubas is a smart guy, and I would assume he is trying too get the 3 kids all locked up to long term contracts right now. Not sure though how much Matthews or Marner are interested in signing right now as opposed to next summer when they both could stand to make millions more. I guess it depends on how much they want to make vs how much they want to win a championship together in Toronto. If they could get Nylander at 6 for 6.5, Marner at 6 for 8.5 and Matthews at 8 for 10, they will have done very well for themselves.

Don't worry, if this time next year Marner is a RFA...he will not get an offer sheet. You are safe.

Hainsey comes off next year .plus after Marleau gets his signing bonus leafs trade him to arizona.he then retires.
Lots of cap space to sign all long term.

The only offer sheet I can see that could possibly make sense would be Arizona making a ridiculous offer for hometown boy Matthews. If Matthews isn't signed by next July, which would be a smart move to wait by Mathews reps, and the Coyotes get Matthews to sign a $15 mil per year offer it could be a franchise saving move. The Leafs would be forced to match it but would put the Leafs in cap trouble. Marner would still want $8-9 mil per year so the Leafs have to be careful what they pay for him. This year Nylander wants to be paid as well. Welcome to the cap world.

The problem with the idea of Arizona signing Matthews to an offer sheet is the signing bonus. I have a hard time imagining Arizona being able to pay 15-18 million on july 1st on one player every year like Toronto can. Besides no one is going to offer sheet anyone. It is a dumb rule that either needs to be phased out or reworked in the next cba.

The title made me laugh. Then I watched part of it and wondered why they used stars from To Catch a Predator as hosts....then I realized the guest.

Islanders should offersheet Matthews out of spite, hard seeing any number that Toronto would not match, but they could completely screw their cap situation if they were to offer him a bigger deal than McDavid's.

Correction: most of his money will be in sponsorships like Caribbean Tire - an obvious tax shelter.

I am WAY more scared that Marner decides to play out the final year of his ELC without an extension, has an awesome season, and they end up having to pay him Matthews/Tavares money.

He deserves it though.

Marner went 4th overall, but im sure theres many drafts where he could have gone first. He's going to break out this year. 80-100 pts. Book it. Thats 9-10.5 mil type contract. I say the Leafs should adopt him and make him a lifer at all costs.

Leafs will sign Marner long term (7 or 8yrs) with a hometown discount, every knows that. Leafs are by far the best team in the league and Marner will make most of his money in sponsorship like Canadian Tire, his salary is not as important like in other markets..

He's not taking a hometown discount, just a hair less than in other markets due to reasons Gluck mentioned. Leafs are stacked and these players know that if they can stay together they can win multiple championships. That's more important than money.

Remember any team can present an offer sheet to a RFA, but the player has to sign said offer sheet.
