My guess is the Leafs would match and be forced to trade Nylander if they run into cap problems.

No credibility, no problem. Ek takes hockey gossip writing and fake rumours to the next level and people come here to eat it up. |

No biggie. First off.......offer sheet means nothing unless Marner signs it, and I think we all know he wants to stay in TO. Secondly, even if he signs it, Leafs have option to match. Thirdly, if the offer sheet cap hit puts the Leafs in a tight spot, they trade Nylander if need be.
The Leafs have a number of very good players and they won’t lose them without having a say in it.
For me the toughest decision they have is Gardner........they need to find out what he wants and it they can’t afford it, trade him and don’t let him walk for nothing. |

I think we all know that Marner never makes it into next summer without an extension... My guess is that if it doesn't get done this summer, it will get done long before the draft. |

Not credible as a theory. Dubas has already said that they have money enough for Matthews, Nylander, Marner and Tavares. If money ever became that tight, I think you'd see other players moved like Marleau or Gardener or maybe even Freddy Andersson.
Marner is even more of a hometown guy than Tavares. and is already making endorsement money in Toronto that he'd never get in most other markets. I can't see him signing an offer sheet unless Dubas did something weird like offer Marner half of Matthews money. That is pretty unlikely to happen without something like a demonic possession. |

I've been on this site for a decade mainly because I love to laugh at the Eklund rumor posts.
1 offer sheet was signed in the last 5 years and 5 in the last 10 years. So it's trended downwards.
But hey, great basis for a story |

I imagine the Leafs will just do a sign and trade.
And that trade will be a 3-way trade.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go feed my pet sasquatch. |

The only offer sheet I can see that could possibly make sense would be Arizona making a ridiculous offer for hometown boy Matthews. If Matthews isn't signed by next July, which would be a smart move to wait by Mathews reps, and the Coyotes get Matthews to sign a $15 mil per year offer it could be a franchise saving move. The Leafs would be forced to match it but would put the Leafs in cap trouble. Marner would still want $8-9 mil per year so the Leafs have to be careful what they pay for him. This year Nylander wants to be paid as well. Welcome to the cap world. |

When asked about the prospect of being drafted by the Leafs, Marner replied...
" That would be a dream come true for me," Marner, the 17-year-old from Thornhill, said. " Growing up in Toronto, everyone always dreams of playing and winning a Stanley Cup in their hometown, for them. With the struggle the Leafs have been through the past couple of years and the playoff slumps they’ve had, you want to be the guy who goes in there and helps them get to the post-season and takes them as far as you can."
Toronto may not win a cup, but there's no doubt that they're closer than they've been in decades. You really think Marner would sign an offsheet at this point, Ek?

An offersheet with an AAV over $10,148,302 and it's four 1st round picks. Anything less and Toronto easily matches.
Aside from the offersheet being tabled, the first thing that would need to happen is that Marner has to sign the sheet himself. Not happening. |

And from draft day:
He came to the draft wearing a blue shirt and blue and white tie. He said it wasn’t on purpose.
“I like blue,” he said. “I go with that a lot as my colours. I was sitting there with Stromer and (he noticed it) and he said ‘You probably planned this.’
