If they're not going to sign an experienced back-up who can play 25-30 games, they should be shopping McElhinney instead and let Pickard and Sparks battle it out. |

Why? McElhinney has been a great backup since we acquired him a year and half ago. |

Andersen has played 66 the last two seasons. I'm praying improved team defense will keep him at 60+ while maintaining or improving his already really good numbers.
(+ I think the Leafs' schedule is a lot more favourable this year compared the last two)
Let McBack up play for 20ish if needed and see how Cocksuckso and Sparks do for this year and pick between 'em for 19/20. |

Hence getting rid of pickard |

McElhinney has been a below average back-up most of his career. He had the best year of his life last year (not gonna happen again most likely) and he still only played 18 games. They need an improvement. And if they aren't going to get an improvement, at least go with one of the young guys, Pickard being arguably the better one considering his stint in the NHL previously.
Pickard passed through waivers before, who's going to trade for him now? At least McElhinney you could shop with the idea that he had a great year last year. |

55-60 should be the maximum for Andersen. They rely on him too much. Every garbage non-playoff / lottery team and every back-to-back should be for the back-up.
Sparks can't go back to the AHL without clearing waivers. Pretty good odds he gets claimed. |

Leafs got McElhinney under contract for one more year. They got time to figure it out still. |

But Pickard and Sparks have to pass through waivers. I'd rather keep the younger guys and trade the old guy.
Also, at his career best last year, he still only played 18 games. If he plays worse than that and Babcock doesn't trust him to play more (which I don't think he does because if he did, he would have played him more considering his numbers) Anderson could end up playing more games and facing more shots. |

So Pickard has more value, so we should trade McElhinney because McElhenney has more value? |

Pickard has more potential (younger), McElhinney might have more value (better season last year). Rather trade the value (because he's old and peaked) and keep the potential. But above all that, I'd rather have a back-up who can play 25-30 games which of all three, I don't think any of them can do. |

Not many teams will want to pay McElhinny or Pickard 850k to play in the minors |

Most teams have their backups or more to battle for the position. It’s why players slip through waivers after camp.
It’s why Enroth was worth a 7th round pick mid season but barely worth a contract at this time. |

So you're saying Pickard and Sparks will clear waivers and play in the AHL again this year and nobody will claim them? |

Sparks likely wouldn’t
Mcbackup would likely go straight through. Pickard maybe...but that’s why they are trying to deal him. And if they can’t then he may or may not get picked up. Not enough to really care. |

Plan A: Sign a back-up who can play 25-30 games (Mason or Lehtonen), trade McElhinney and Sparks.
Plan B: Let Sparks and Pickard battle for the back-up spot, trade McElhinney and the loser of the battle.
Either way you cut it, McElhinney should still be the guy on the block. |
