there is nothing to prove playing him or sitting him determines what he will be

nothing

peyton, elway and aikman turned out just fine playing on crappy teams and getting pounded their rookie year

- homiedclown

Then why doesn’t every rookie with upside & a higher ceiling automatically start?

Obviously coaches see merit to making sure their players are “trained” before they start

god this is worse then when you said lehner was better then rask

there is nothing to show it's better to start a qb in year 1 or sit him

if they sucked when they started for 2 years, they sucked when they went somewhere else

just because some were good after being on the bench for years, some others on the bench still sucked when they got their chance

if peterman was so great, we would not have drafted our franchise qb, allen

- homiedclown

So then how can u be so sure that starting him right away is the best way to go?

steelers were 6-10 the year before they drafted ben

baltimore was 5-11 the year before they drafted flacco

bengals were 4-12 the year before they drafted dalton

we were 9-7 and a playoff team

want to try again, you just got owned

- homiedclown

Ben threw for a shade over 2600 yards. (19 TD’s 11 INT’s) in his rookie year..... If riding the Steel Curtain means that was the right decision then sure I guess.

Flacco throw for 2900 with 14 TD’s and 12 INT’s once again hello Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, BART Scott, Haloti Ngata. They also had McGahee and McClain combine for 1600 yards rushing....

Dalton at least had 3400 yards. 20 TD’s and 13 INT’s. They went 9-7 barely squeaking into the playoffs and Geno Atkins and that Bengals defense was very good once again. Also having AJ Green to make catches in triple coverage doesn’t hurt.

How exactly I got owned by QB’s being carried by their teams is beyond me. Are you going to tell me now that the Broncos won Super Bowl 50 due to Manning’s flailing arm ? Or how the almighty Osweiler went 5-1 that season ? Is Trent Dilfer now a revelation because he was carried by the 2002 Ravens ? How are Vince Young, RG3, and Mark Sanchez doing ? Sanchez took the Jets to the AFC championship or was it their defense ?

you can't

same is said for sitting him on the bench

you can't

all I know

they wanted to take him slow

now AJ does not have a broken collarbone and the most important week of preseason, Allen is getting the reps with the number 1 team and the start Sunday

we don't see the practices every day

it seem pretty clear the coaching staff sees something they really like with allen, or something they really don't like with aj and nate

Let me put it this way...

If it’s not helpful for a QB to sit & develop,
then why do teams like the Packers draft Aaron Rodgers when they know they aren’t gonna start him right away?

Instead of drafting and developing Garrapolo, why didn’t Bellicheck just wait until Brady retired if he thought it was a good idea to start a rookie QB right away?

Why did Andy Reid still go with Alex Smith last year instead of Mahomes?

Are all of these great coaches wrong?
I don’t think so

In some cases,
QBs are ready to play right away

But there is certainly value to learning & making sure u have a good handle on the complexities of being an NFL QB before you’re thrown into the fire too

Maybe Allen is ready
From what I’ve seen, i think more time would be of benefit to him

you said that the steelers, ravens, and bengals had a much better roster then the bills

the bills were 9 and 7 these other teams MUCH worse

you didn't say the other teams were building much better rosters after they drafted their qb

for all we know, our rookie lb will be a stud
next year we acquire a hall of fame wr
etc
etc

and our d on paper is not something to sneeze at

They were all top picks that played right away. How do we know Allen is going to be special ? I’m sure these same organizations were hyped about those same QB’s week 3 into the preseason of their rookie seasons as well. Yes the Bills went 9-7 but was last season an outlier ? They had a lot of things go their way including the Dalton completion to get them in.

Point if the matter being, if he’s ready then he’s ready. I would personally make sure he 100% knows the offense and can read defenses. The kid probably had a 10 play callsheet at Wyoming and this ain’t D3 college football anymore.

no rookie would be 100% at knowing offense and defense

and wyoming was not div 3

so allen is the new toy to hate already, got it

Our defense was terrible against the run after we traded you know who
Our pass rush was mediocre at best
We got by on getting turnovers,
which generally don’t translate from year to year
I don’t think we can count on them for sure at least

We’ve got a lot of questions still on that side of the ball

I like the secondary for the most part,
but even our CBs after White are a question

But none of that is the point

The point is that we should be doing what’s best for Allen long term

Didn’t hurt Aaron Rodgers to sit
He even said it helped him be more prepared when he did get his chance to be the starter

- jdfitz77

Brett Favre Peterman ain't.

Vontae Davis was a 2 time pro bowl cb
we added depth at DT, edge rusher and drafted a future stud MLB

there is every reason to be optimistic about our D

Sure...
but I’m not gonna say the defense is gonna be comparable to the one Flacco had in Baltimore either

I think Allen has the tools to be a great QB. All I’m saying is it’s not the end of the world if he sits. He plays 3 quarters against an actual NFL defense this week. If he performs well you won’t hear another peep out of me. I follow the Bills a lot being in the viewership area and wasrooting for them to make the playoffs last year (except when they beat the broncos week 3). Alike the Sabres I think they are on the right track.

your trying to justify benching the franchise qb when stink and stank were ahead of him on the depth chart

after friday I want nothing to do with aj as a starter, and neither should anyone else on this board

They were “ok” if i remember correctly
But what does that have to do with anything?

Some guys are ready to play right away
Some are not

This isn’t a hard concept here guys

- jdfitz77

No poop, Sherlock, he's been very good. He's shown he's ready, so far. The players already respect him which is another thing in favor of him starting.

The point should be to do what’s best for Allen “long term”

Playing him too soon can lead to him developing bad habits

We want this kid to be more than Flacco & Dalton, don’t we?

No reason to rush him
We aren’t winning the Super Bowl this year no matter who plays QB

No, I’m trying to justify “not starting Allen before he’s ready”

Do u really not see the difference?

Allen isn’t a “franchise” qb... yet
The point is to make sure we correctly develop him into one

My opinion is that him sitting a bit will help him learn more and be better prepared when he does become the full time starter

It’s also my opinion that if he starts before he’s ready, he can get overwhelmed & develop bad habits
That can lead to it taking longer before he becomes a stud qb,
or even prevent him from ever becoming one

Can i prove any of that?
Nope
But that’s my belief

And i don’t think any of that is unreasonable

It is fair to argue whether or not he’s “ready”?
Sure, i guess

But the rest of what i said makes complete sense

Obviously i disagree

If he really is ready,
then of course we should start him

If he sits some,
It will absolutely not hurt his development one single bit
Will it?

flacco won a super bowl, I will take that

ben won 2 in his first 5 years

daulton went to the playoffs first 4 years

right now I would take any of those

and again, all three of those teams were eliminated from the playoffs before december, and then they drafted their qb

our team was in the playoffs

we don't have crap at the other 21 positions

o line might be a little weak
wr might be lacking top end talent

but overall the roster is very solid

Aren't these cases based on an individual preparedness?

Teams who have a farve, Bledsoe, ect

Or teams like the Bill's that have a total of 5 or 6 nfl starts.

Play allen if hes ready, I agree

- Boss34

That's the whole point. So far there's no reason to sit him. He's shown poise in the pocket even when it's collapsing around him, he hasn't made any "WTF was that?" throws, yet. He hasn't been the most accurate, but he has been the best so far. 3 straight scoring drives on Friday for 13 of the 19 points scored. Nick O'Leary beat a blown coverage for an easy TD with Peterman, McCarron did nothing, 4 straight 3 and outs.

which preseason game is the most important?
