I don’t disagree with getting rid of him, but the narrative that he was the main issue was so far off base

He didn’t know how to bring out the stud in Joel Armia.

He bogged everyone down in systems and minutiae. No one knew what the hell they were supposed to do. That's what it seemed like anyway

Two different coaches who failed to design a system for their rosters, and instead insisted their rosters play a system that didn’t fit their skill sets.

Housley had a tough decision.

1.) Run a modern system with the outdated roster he was given

Or

2.) Run an outdated system with his 2010 roster

YOUR WORDS
“If there’s something specific your referring to you should say so and let us know what it is.
Otherwise this is just a preconceived notion.”

So please...
feel free to tell us all what Coach would’ve been successful
AND
describe the SYSTEM (since u brought it up)
that would’ve thrived with the roster we had

And specifically how said coach would’ve gotten more out of guys like:
Tennyson
Redmond
Griffith
Pouliot
Moulson
Larsson
Girgensons
Nolan
Josefson
Faulk
Beaulieu
Bogosian
Wilson
Antipin
Lehner
Ch Johnson
and various other non-contributors

Come on man
Coaching matters a bit
But no matter how good a coach you are,
u can’t turn sh!t into a diamond

When you’ve got so many players without SKILL, I’d imagine it’s pretty hard to play a system that fits their skill sets

Just sayin...

There isnt a single place anywhere in what I wrote that suggested that I thought the team was going to be "a diamond." And I'm not saying theres a coach out there that would have put them into the playoffs, I'm saying a different approach to the team might have gotten more out of them.

Too often, you argue for the sake of arguing.

Housely implemented a system that required the defense to initiate and drive the offense through long passes. Our defense didn't have that skill - they didn't have much skill, but what they had was as puck carriers or tic tac passers.

The proper system would have called on the forwards to bring the puck up the ice and use defense as options for give and go or outlets.

I don’t think we had too many forwards that were even capable of carrying the puck up the ice either though...

Whether it was Housley, Bylsma, or whoever...
they didn’t have much to work with to implement ANY kind of system effectively

That’s what I’m saying

Exactly

And either way,
with the talent we had,
he’d have been unsuccessful

I think we actually have proof that he tried both, and both failed. We all know the roster sucked. Housley may still suck. But I've said it a million times, Housley should not be evaluated for what was basically a leftover GMTM roster with some minor tweaks.

What he does with Dahlin and the roster this year is the test. He now has an NHL roster, and the best D prospect in years. He couldn't ask for a better "scenario," as Botterill would say

Was wondering about this. Oddly, even though I think Botts really likes Housley, if we're bottom of the barrel come the New Year...I think he's gone. Am I close or to quick?

Yeah I think this team has to look better than a 31st place team by New Years, but I'm willing to bet he'll have the entire season to get out of last place. Team is much more balanced, there's a major influx of talent, the expectations, imo, is that we're the 8th-10th best team in the east.

The talent alone beats Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Carolina, NJ and NYI.

Gerard Gallant and the new coaches are safe.

So like 7/31. I'm not even sure if I would call Reirdon safe. It's a results based business. Hell, Torts got one year in Vancouver

I’m still expecting a trade or two before the start of the season as well due to the amount of NHL contracts we have. Unless we are exposing a couple players to waivers.

Seems fair. As you say he's definitely got more to work with.

I also wonder if NYI are bad enough to be last place. Ottawa is going to be tough to "lose to" but my god that roster has gotten decimated over the past few years.

Yup. Doubt they want to lose Baptiste or Bailey for nothing. Might be able to package one of them and a late pick for a prospect or something...2 for 1 deals anyone???

I think he will at least try to move out a couple guys
Even if it’s just for late round picks

It would be great if he could pull off a 3 or 4 for 1 trade like Homie was talking about a few weeks ago

I’m thinking that Sam has to get signed before bringing in any other $$$ though,
just so we know where we are at with the Cap

Skinner-Eichel-Okposo
Sheary-Mitts-Reinhart
Sobotka-Berglund-Pominville
Erod-?-?

Those are the only safe players on the roster imo barring a shock. So Wilson, Girgensons, Larsson, Bailey, Baptiste, are fighting for 2 spots. With Thompson, CJ Smith, Nylander, Oloffsson, Asplund waiting in the wings. If one of the young guys impresses in camp then what haha.
