Anyone else notice that when players leave the Flyers then people come out of the woodwork to "give them credit" or tell everyone how they will be missed?

It's annoying. I can't stand when people hate on a player then he goes elsewhere and it's all "I wish him well, he played hard and tried his best".

Trouba. It would require less to get him versus EK. Let the young forwards continue to develop. We've added a 30 goal guy in JvR and Simmonds will be healthy. G and Jake will have another strong year even if they don't exceed last year's point totals.

This is the problem with August!!!!

- cdearth23

Thing is, Winnipeg is in win now mode. If I am the Jets I do everything possible to keep Trouba.

Imo its going to have to be either Myers or Sanheim that develop into that next tier kind of d-man the team can rely on to eat minutes. While the Flyers are loaded with prospects I do think its slightly questionable about whether there is enough "ceiling" there. Myers and Sanheim have the ability to reach that next tier, they are near untouchable to me.

Trouba is going to cost you a damn pretty penny.

Yeah, neither type of player will come cheap and, at this point, it's hard to say if they would need to make either move. I'd still keep an eye on Trouba. If he's not signed to an extension by the draft, he's a guy I'd try to acquire. Even if Sanheim is part of the price, so be it. The Flyers already have Ghost to anchor the top pp unit for the foreseeable future and some combo of Provorov and Myers should be able to run the 2nd unit. I would be very happy going into 19-20 with a defense corps of:

Provorov-Trouba
Ghost-Hagg
some combo of Myers, Morin and/or AMac

edit: re Seguin
I'd be shocked if Dallas doesn't re-sign him, but if he becomes available as a UFA, I'd be all in. The guy is an offensive machine.

The best thing the Flyers can do with Sanheim is to let him develop. Has the potential to be better than Trouba.

Yes he does, but the key word is potential. It’s not a given.

Trouba is not a top pair defenseman. He is a younger AMac. He isn't even a top two minutes PK Dman player for the Jets, and the Jets protect him with 50-50 ZS.

There were much better, cheaper options for the Flyers to get a real partner for Provy. They passed, so Provy will be forced to waste his offensive upside for now.

- hockeyal

Provorov hasn't been wasting his offensive upside to this point, why would he be now? He led the NHL in goals for defenseman.

Which specific options did the Flyers pass on?

That's true but Trouba is not a player that the Flyers should be giving up Sanheim + to acquire. Better off seeing if Sanheim can reach that potential. It's a pretty easy call.

Actually think it’s a pretty tough call, I can see the merits of both. Niinimaa, Pitkanen, even Behn Wilson. Flyers have had a quite a few highly touted young D that never reached their potential in their history. Trouba may not be a superstar but he’s a legit 24 year old rh shutdown guy with good wheels, size and skill that is very good on the PK and can match up defensively against top lines. It’s not like they’d be moving Sanheim for a guy nearing the end of his prime.

I like Sanheim a lot, but I think you are underrating Trouba a bit.

He played a shutdown roll and 1st pair pk minutes for one of the best teams in the league last season at the age of 23. Is he an offensive stud? No, but he makes a good first pass has a decent point shot and is far from unskilled.

edit: Again, I like Sanheim, but some around here act like he’s the 2nd coming of Mark Howe. He hasn’t done anything noteworthy at the NHL level to date. I think he’ll end up a good NHL player but it’s not a given.

I think your overrating Trouba. He is a solid young defenseman but not the kind of player that would drastically elevate the Flyers as a team. So why make that move? Why bet against Sanheim? Not the right move for the Flyers in my opinion. I'll bet on Sanheim becoming a solid 2 way top 4 point producing defenseman.

Nobody is acting like Sanheim is the 2nd coming of Howe. Hyperbole on your part.

He's not untouchable but Trouba at this time isn't 100% necessary. We still have to get our goalie situation figured out...and if that takes one year then it gives Sanheim and Meyers ample time to show whether they are trending to 1st pairing ability.

If they stall or top out then we could start looking at moves. Nothing against Trouba...I just think moving for a top pair Dman this season is one year premature.

Yes, but next offseason is his last as a RFA. So if you want to get him and lock him up, no time like the present.
